My Notes edit

My self-summary

I spend a lot of time arguing with philosophers; the rest of the time I’m not much interested in arguing or being very serious. I like music. A lot. I’m also a vegetarian and eat a dangerous amount of Tofurky products.

What I'm doing with my life

I’m a professor of philosophy. I moved here from Austin (where I got my Ph.D. in May 2007) to start teaching at UIUC. Before that, Boulder. Before that, Massachussets. Before that, the San Fernando Valley. I teach two classes a semester, and I’ve got five years of chasing tenure ahead of me, which means lots of writing, lots of running around to conferences, lots of sending papers off to journals, and lots of caffeine. Delicious, delicious caffeine...

I'm really good at

Philosophy, making friends with animals (esp. dogs), memorizing song lyrics, and putting things in alphabetical order.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Music (absolute top favorites): The Band, Tom Waits, Ryan Adams, Little Feat, the Drive By Truckers, the Staples Singers, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, George Jones, the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, Grant Lee Phillips, the Kinks, Paul Simon, Steve Earle, Janis Joplin, Townes van Zandt, Nick Drake, Neutral Milk Hotel, Jefferson Airplane, Skip Spence, Joe Cocker, Grateful Dead, the Byrds, Louden Wainwright III, Pink Floyd, Gram Parsons, Elton John.

Books etc.: anything by Vonnegut, Kafka, 'Portnoy’s Complaint' by Philip Roth, Baudelaire, T.S. Eliot's 'The Wasteland', 'Zorba the Greek', 'No Exit' by Sartre.

Movies: Big Lebowski, the Royal Tenenbaums, I Heart Huckabees, Bringing Out the Dead, American Beauty, the Anchorman, Payback, Fight Club

I spend a lot of time thinking about

whether to get a basset hound.

On a typical Friday night I am

Downtown Champaign. Or sometimes at the Canopy Club whenever someone worth seeing is passing through town. Or sometimes holed up like the only-child recluse I am, watching Netflix, and reading philosophy and online gossip sites.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I was once tricked into admitting that I like Michael Bolton. I didn't realize it was Michael Bolton.

You should message me if

You're cool. Or dorky.
