dog-loving, academic, and fresh to death

My self-summary Propose an edit

I think it's high time for a profile update, don't you? Plus, paragraphs are way less intimidating than lists, or something.

Despite the fact my profile has been Indiana, PA since I first logged on here, I am finally living in the town itself, and it's a strange adjustment--especially in the summer, as this town seems to turn into a ghost town once the mercury rises. At this point, I'm dying for the academic term to start so that my life begins to regain some normalcy.

As for me, I'm about six credits shy of my M.A. in English literature (if that's your thing, I can totally bore your pants off with my thesis topic--just ask!) and should be starting my PhD in the spring--whether I stay at IUP for the lengtho of it is still up in the air (for whatever reason, a lot of English PhD programs don't accept applicants midway through the year).

Now that the academic stuff is out of the way: I'm heavily into books, movies, and body modification. I currently have five tattoos (two of which are rather sizeable) and six body piercings. My secret love is interior design, so stepping down from a house to an apartment is a bit of a drag.

What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit

I'm going to graduate school, studying English Literature (I can specify topics of academic interest if anyone is terribly curious). In fact, I'm a short-termer--after I graduate December, I could end up anywhere in the country (or even outside of it). I've basically decided that since I'm not independently wealthy and will likely have to work until I'm an old man, I might as well do something I'm ridiculously passionate about as opposed to a more lucrative position in the private sector. Had one, once. Didn't stick.

I'm really good at Propose an edit

speaking in really wanky academic terms, remembering the lyrics to songs, making friends with dogs, and interior design. I'm also great for book/movie recommendations. And buying/picking out gifts. I'm really good at finding the right thing for a specific person.

And I offer these things free of charge. Take me up on it.

"Good" doesn't even begin to describe how proficient I am in MLA citation.

EDITORS

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit

As of right now, it seems to be the GREAT GATSBY tattoo on my forearm. Come winter, I have no idea what people will notice.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit

Books: The Great Gatsby, The Bluest Eye, The Fortress of Solitude, The Big Sleep, Native Son, Woman at Point Zero, The Human Stain, Giovanni's Room, The Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Half of a Yellow Sun, Assassination Vacation, various comics and graphic novels... this list can go on and on.

Movies: The Thin Man, Notting Hill, Love Actually, Leon, The Philadelphia Story, Casablanca, North by Northwest, To Catch a Thief, Notorious, So I Married an Axe-Murderer, Kicking & Screaming (the Noah Baumbach one, not the one about soccer or something), De-Lovely, Bound by Honor (Blood In, Blood Out), High Fidelity, Trainspotting, Basquiat, Shoot 'Em Up... another really long list.

Music: a lot of jazz (Chet Baker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Glenn Miller, Charles Mingus) and standards (Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Blossom Dearie), a lot of hip hop (Eric B. and Rakim, Black Star--and it's component parts, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Gang Starr, the Roots, MF Grimm, Boogie Down Productions, the Notorious B.I.G.), and some other assorted things (Tom Waits, Ani Difranco, Leonard Cohen, Dar Williams). I just discovered Vampire Weekend--I'm tragically unhip--but I'm quite charmed by them. Oh, and I love spoken word.

The six things I could never do without Propose an edit

Something to read. Something to write, and the desire to do so. Something to watch. Something to listen to. Something to pet. Something to mock.

I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit

What one actually does with an M.A. in English. I mean, AVENUE Q has a song called "What Do You Do with a B.A. in English," but I already did that, evidently.

I need my own song.

On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit

making the universe safe for pretension.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here Propose an edit

is that I think privacy is highly overrated. Really, I'll take requests--make suggestions, and I'll put them here.

Here's one: I have every season of Ally McBeal on DVD. I had to special order them from the UK, and then get a region-free DVD player to watch them, but it was worth it. I loves me some Ally McBeal.

Here's another: one of the aforementioned piercings is totally below the belt.

You should message me if Propose an edit

you have an urgent, burning desire to do so--something you need to tell me or, otherwise, you might explode, and you don't want to do that because you are wearing your favorite pants.

Or you are bored. Or find me interesting. Or whatever.

Or you need a book or movie recommendation.

It really doesn't matter where you are, as long as you think I might think that you are dope, and vice versa.
