My Notes edit

My self-summary

After not touching this for a couple years, I've concluded this is as good as it's going to get, self-summary-wise! Just the facts, ma'am: I don't drink; I don't smoke; I listen to progressive rock; I'm a musician (keyboards); I'm not really into (watching) sports; I see almost every movie that's released; I read a ton; and I love to hike, scuba dive, snow ski, and travel, and to a lesser degree, enjoy bowling, racquetball, and golf. I live to explore. I take life and my job seriously, but not excessively so, because I also love to have fun and have raised goofing off to an art form.

What I'm doing with my life

After being a consultant for twenty years, I've now had a "real" job for eight years. The money and security are lovely, but I miss my flexibility so I'm easing back to consulting. Fortunately I love what I do; I'm a programmer, and just wipe those computer geek stereotypes right out of your mind!

What else? Traveled a lot this year and saw a staggering number of concerts (no, I don't think it's excessive to fly to England or Germany to see a concert!). Nearing completion on remodeling my kitchen, and finally doing some scuba diving again!

I'm really good at

Non-sequiturs, tangents, programming, playing keyboards, and especially getting from point "A" to point "B" in record time. No, seriously, my navigation skills are truly frightening... and according to my friends, so is my driving, but I think that's just from growing up in Los Angeles.

Oh, and see those guys over there on the right? They are NOTHING like me. Just so you know.

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me

Is that I don't make a memorable first impression, although I've gotten comments on my eyes occasionally.

Actually, now that I think about it, probably the most comments I've gotten go roughly like this: "How can you not be freezing to death?" This is because I don't tend to be cold, regardless of the weather, so I'm virtually never in a coat (or sweater or even a warm shirt) despite it being, say, 35 degrees outside.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(a) books: WAY too many to list, but a few authors I like are Douglas Adams, Richard Bach, Clive Barker, Lillian Jackson Braun, James Lee Burke, Lee Childs, Michael Connolly, Michael Crichton, Jeffrey Deaver, Stephen King, PJ O'Roarke, Dan Simmons, Stephen White, etc. etc. Usually if I like an author I will have read all his/her books. Cartoonists Berke Breathed and Darby Conley, too.

(b) movies: Way too many of these too, but This is Spinal Tap, Princess Bride, The Tao of Steve, Harold and Maude, Johnny Dangerously, Buckaroo Bonzai, Eating Raoul, Airplane, LA Story, Zero Effect, Ladyhawke, The Abyss, and Contact should give you a few ideas. Actually, I like just about all movies, even crappy ones, but I have a weakness for black comedy and good sci-fi. I even like "chick flicks".

(c) music: Progressive rock. Kudos if you even know what this is! For the record, the genre did not die in the 70s; it's alive and well and living underground.

(d) food: Italian, French, German, Greek, Brazilian, Lithuanian, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, BBQ, and lots of others. Not into Southwestern, Sushi, or anything involving insects. I'm sort of a gourmand. I'm a picky eater but I like a LOT of stuff. I'm also a great cook, but I'll admit to being lazy at times when it comes to just cooking for myself.

The six things I could never do without

Let's just stipulate to air, water, food etc. So... my computer, the woods, the ocean, my truck and a road, music, movies, books. Yeah, that's seven. Sue me.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

For the last few minutes, answering these damn questions.

On a typical Friday night I am

Seeing a movie. Or eating at a new restaurant. Or maybe on my way to some hidden weekend getaway. Or right here on the computer. Or plotting. You just never know. All things being equal, I would prefer not to be doing these things alone, but that doesn't stop me.

The most private thing I'm willing to admit here

I spent a weekend at a nudist camp (about 25 years ago). It's less exciting than you think.

You should message me if

You feel so inclined and, obviously, think there is a reason to do so! Or if I wrote to you, even if I'm the antithesis of all you find good in the world, just because it's the right thing to do.
