My self-summary
Hi

I've been in Austin for a few years, I'm on OK cupid mostly for dating, but I'm open to friendship if it doesn't work out like that. I'm not actively seeking a LTR, more interested in dating or shorter relationships, but anything is possible. Really I'm just looking for a great connection, and I'm not too picky about the wrapper that it comes in.

I'm a very easygoing and understanding sort of person, I spend much of my time absorbed in thought, but I love to listen to people when they have things to say. Meaningful conversation is one of my favorite things, I can talk for hours with people that I really like and are interested in talking with me. I don't force my thoughts or opinions on people unsolicited. I like that, because if somebody doesn't know what I think, it's usually because they haven't bothered to find out.

Anything else you'd like to know about me you can check out in the profile, or just ask me!
What I’m doing with my life
Focusing on friends and family, while trying to meet new people. I'm working doing phone support for an awful ISP, hardly glamorous, but it's decent income, and it's pretty flexible. I also enjoy a little extra income from working on a self-employed sort of basis with PC repairs and freelance geotechnical consulting.

Lately I've been focusing on developing my language skills, figuring out the next time I can visit Japan is becoming a bigger part of my life. I used to live in Japan when I was a child, totally forgot everything about the language, and have started over learning to speak.

It's a very difficult process, but I'm very serious about learning the language again. I wouldn't say I speak it poorly at this point, but I'm not really "Okay" either, I think OKC's options for language skills aren't really adequate.
I’m really good at
Driving (parking), tennis, snowboarding, iaijutsu, conversation, making people laugh, understanding people, video games, PC repair, eating and discussing food, cooking, literary, artistic and cinematic appreciation
The first things people usually notice about me
My height. After that, people sometimes notice that I can be quiet, I'm usually just a bit introverted, but my mind is always active. After I warm up to people, they usually find that I'm thoughtful and fun to talk with.

My eyes tend to stand out too.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
The Mosquito Coast, The Lord of the Flies, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, Overclocked, The Great Gatsby, Slaughterhouse 5, Geek Love, Jack McDevitt, Most Franz Kafka, Various Graphic novels and comic books. Wow, that's all fiction; I much prefer reading nonfiction. I'm a huge fan of Malcom Gladwell, in a similar fashion, I loved Freakonomics. Thomas Friedman is a great author, but I find him preachy sometimes. Fake nonfiction also amuses me to no end, Max Brooks cracks me up.

(I'm adding to this list as they occur to me)
The Big Lebowski, Southpark Bigger Longer and Uncut, Oldboy, Slingblade, Most Wes Anderson movies (yay for Fantastic Mr. Fox), Leon The Professional (and other Luc Besson movies), Superbad, Gran Torino, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, The Good the Bad and the Weird, Deathproof, Pulp Fiction, Yojimbo, Hayao Miyazaki movies, The Other Guys, Lost in Translation, District 9, Grandma's Boy, Observe and Report, Charlie Bartlett, Bubba Ho-Tep (Bruce Campbell in general), many many (many) others. I really like movies.

My musical taste is extremely varied, sometimes a little outdated. I love rock (broad statement, I know), rap and hip hop, electronic, industrial, jazz, motown, classical, select movie soundtracks do it for me. I'm not too concerned about genre, if it's good, I'll probably like it.

Love all sorts of different food, Asian food in particular, love Thai, everything Japanese (except Natto), Chinese (dim sum is my favorite), Korean, Vietnamese, Indian, Mediterranian and Middle Eastern, Mexican, El Salvadorian, American food/Bar food. Only thing I don't really like is British food, but who does; that and I'm not a huge fan of Cheese (it's weird, I know, I can't help it).
The six things I could never do without
The Internet, Good Food, Games (any sort, I have to occupy my mind somehow), Friends and Family, Some Mode of Transportation (preferably a car) and Coffee.

Mostly cliche, a cellphone used to be in that list, but I recently went without for a month, it was terrible, but I wouldn't say I can't do without it.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The future, technological evolution and political trends, human social interaction (behavior, interaction, relationships), film, natural history and evolutionary theory, science, my life, my pets, my friends, video games as an evolving facet of media, what I'd like to do with my life if suddenly had the capital to do so.

Wow, I've taken that too seriously.

Also think a lot about if and what I want to eat, why people are trying to pocket my lighters and if they think I don't notice, or if they notice they are doing it, what the funniest conclusion to a situation could be, how intelligent different animals are (both as individuals and species, ex: "Wow, that dog is pretty dumb"), whether or not I need more coffee.

Like I said, I spend a lot of time in my head, and multi task at all times.
On a typical Friday night I am
Out with friends for a bite to eat, or to catch some music or just drink beer and play pool. Sometimes I'll go see a movie, the Alamo Drafthouses are my favorite theaters. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a night at home though. I'm usually up for anything new, but if left to my own devices, that's about what will happen.

Update: That's what I'd love to do with my Friday night, the most likely case is that I'm working late or working later. Sunday nights are basically my Fridays.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I really really like Penguins.

I have a very discerning nose; if somebody doesn't smell good to me, it probably won't last, not this is entirely subjectve. Needless to say, I stay pretty clean (otherwise I wouldn't be able to deal with myself).

Also, I just checked my personality awards, it's scary. I really just answer a lot of questions. OKC is trying to figure me out, but it has a long way to go.

It seems I can be pretty private. I will answer nearly any question though.

You should message me if
You like thoughtful, intelligent, passionate yet somewhat shy people. If you dig mutual respect. If you enjoy wry, sarcastic and occasionally dark humor.

I don't expect everything to work out everytime, but if you like what you see and want to at least chat or meet up, I love to see where things go.
