I am adventurous, cheerful, and candid.

My Self-Summary

I'm a liberal, absentminded, low-drama goof who tries to see the best in people. My home's a cozy flat in sunny Mission-Dolores, San Francisco. I've more interests than time already, but am always interested in learning something new. I'm pretty active; you'll find me rock climbing, hiking and backpacking, playing tennis, going out dancing at raucous parties, and biking around the city. I love road trips, especially through the golden, scenic California countryside – or the breathtaking, windy coastal roads. Travel is a big treat too, and I'd love to visit just about everywhere some day.

I love good coffee and roast my own, though Four Barrel keeps me pretty well supplied too. I'm something of a news and politics junkie, though my memory's not good enough to be a real buff. Games are fun, and I'm working on my crossword skills. While I'm not really a social butterfly, I love to have people around, playing host with elaborate cooking and inventive cocktails or going out for drinks and conversation at a divey Mission bar. And yeah, Stuff White People Like sometimes hits painfully close to home.

What I’m doing with my life

Enjoying sunny San Francisco days. Working on interesting problems. Trying new things.

I’m really good at

Forgetting things. But I can mix you a sensational drink! I'm a pro at turning my kitchen into a disaster zone. I'm really good at making unforgettably-scrumptious fancy sandwiches to eat on top of a mountain.

The first things people usually notice about me

My infectious enthusiasm.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Reading's got to include Pale Fire, Neal Stephenson's Quicksilver (fun nerding out to the history of science and western geopolitics), The New Yorker, The New York Times (in print!), The Atlantic, and Talking Points Memo. I also love The Best Recipe, The French Laundry Cookbook, A Year in a Vegetarian Kitchen, Alice Waters' books on Fruit and Vegetables, etc etc... umm, I'm a bit of a cookbook nerd?

I've got a big list of great movies to watch, but haven't found the time to make it that far yet. In the meantime, favorites are The Royal Tenenbaums, Labyrinth, Stop Making Sense, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Heathers.

I love music and have something playing most of the day. I'm partial to David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, Andrew Bird, Patrick Wolf, Blonde Redhead, David Byrne & The Talking Heads, Wilco, Burial, TV on the Radio, M.I.A. (of course), Iron & Wine, Joni Mitchell, Sufjan Stevens, Of Montreal, Antony & the Johnsons, Kate Bush, Justice, Cornelius, St. Vincent, My Brightest Diamond, Dan Deacon, Phillip Glass, and The Books. Oh, and Radiolab is the best thing on the radio (though All Songs Considered is sometimes pretty great too).

I'm an omnivore who likes pretty much every type of food I've had. I'll try anything at least once. My favorite ice cream comes from Humphry Slocombe (though Bi-Rite's a close second); my favorite pizza is good italian with a runny egg on top. I love sushi, polenta, chocolate mousse, roast chicken, spinach, bitter greens, mushrooms, Tartine's crusty levain, creamy, savory carrot soup, fennel, figs, proper risotto, fresh olive oil, good balsamic, and salted caramel. I love bitter and sweet – spicy too. I'm a bit of a beer geek, just learned how to make mead, and can get a little out of control in the kitchen shaking up a tumbler of pre-prohibition pyrotechnic cocktails.

The six things I could never do without

Strong, black, fresh-roasted coffee. Beautiful places to go hiking. Good friends. New places to explore and new people to meet. Something engaging to think about and work on. Enough free time to get out and do things.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Some new project that's caught my fancy. Right now, I'm planning on starting a community garden plot. I've never done much gardening, but it sounds like a ton of fun.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I don't have a uvula... anymore.

You should message me if

You're fun, enthusiastic, and energetic. Or perhaps you're sarcastic and wry? You're smart and literate and good at what you do. You've got an adventurous palate. You're laid-back and low drama. You're not confined by gendertypical, heteronormative stereotypes. You know what you want and you're not afraid to say it. You're not a social conservative or racist/sexist/homophobe. You're independent, articulate, opinionated, and passionate.
