My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Hello, my name is Michael.

I enjoy spending time with my friends. Doing something, like hiking, camping, skiing, diving, or just about anything is preferred to just "chilling" or just hanging out doing nothing. I'm a very active person, I like to always be doing stuff. I can be a very quiet person, but if you get me started on a good topic of discussion, I can be very verbose.

I used to be something of a night owl, but then all the friends I hung out with late at night stopped being awake late at night, so now I tend to go to bed at a normal time of day.

I am allergic to cigarette smoke, so if you are a smoker, don't expect me to be willing to be around you for a while after you smoke. I don't have any friends that smoke cigarettes, and I intend to keep it that way. Weed doesn't bother me, just cigarettes. Perfume and other artificial smells can also bother me sometimes. My nose is rather odd.

I have done quite a bit of dance, gymnastics, circus, yoga, and martial arts in my life, and would like to do more in the future, I just have to find the right place.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I just started a Master's degree program at SFU, as I want to study AI and machine learning.

I did some travelling last summer, first to Taiwan, to see what another culture is like, and had some great experiences; and then to New York, to present at a Machine Learning conference. Now I'm living in Vancouver, enjoying the outdoors, and trying to learn how to make a computer that is smarter than I am. But I'll try to avoid making Skynet....
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
I don't know if I'm really good at all of these, but I consider myself to be good enough.

Hiking and camping....
Scuba Diving (or at least sort of good at it).
Being blunt, and speaking my mind. I tend to expect others to speak their mind also....
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Likely the very colorful clothes that I wear. Tie-dye is pretty awesome!

I'm pretty quiet, so most of the time the people I'm with do most of the talking. I'm hoping they notice that. :-)

When I do speak, I tend to speak my mind. But I do tend to say what I'm thinking, and I tend to say it how it is, I speak literally, and assume that others are speaking literally. Sometimes it's obvious that it's not meant that way, but if it's not as plain as the broad side of a barn, I'm going to assume you meant literally whatever you said. I'm also very honest, which goes along with the speaking literally.

I'm about as subtle as a flying brick!
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
I love Sci/Fi and Fantasy books, ones that seem more thought out, and seem to follow some logical rules, or are slightly realistic are nice. Things like David Weber, John Ringo, Terry Goodkind, and George R.R. Martin are nice. I also like Terry Pratchett, Robert Jordan, Tad Williams, and a whole host of other authors. I used to read a lot more then I do now, but I still read a fair amount. I tend to stay away from comics, or chain books based on movies.

I like Action and Sci/Fi movies, Comedies are good too. I strongly dislike horror, and depressing movies of any kind... Sappy love stories are okay if I'm watching them with someone I can cuddle with. I don't watch TV, but I do download a few TV shows. Doctor Who is an awesome show, Firefly and Dollhouse were both great, a few others are worth watching too.

I like just about any kind of food. I tend to eat healthy at home, and eat just about whatever strikes my fancy the few times I do eat out. I never eat fast food, and rarely eat American style food (when eating out). I love trying new things, spicy food, garlic, onions, and so forth. Curry is a huge favourite of mine. Thai, Italian, Greek, Indian, Sushi, and Mexican are likely my favourites, but really, I like just about everything. I dislike the texture of mushrooms, and some forms of cooked seafood. That's about it....

I'm also a cook, and while I tend to be lazy if I'm only feeding myself, I like to make awesome feasts when I have friends over. I took quite a few cooking classes at the SRJC, some of my favourites were the Thai and Indian cooking classes.

I like music without lyrics, words, or any form of vocals. Things like Änglagård, Apocalyptica, Bond, Mono, Mussorgsky, Ratatat, Tchaikovsky, and Wagner.... And many others... If it doesn't have voices, chances are I'll like it... And if anyone knows a really nice percussion ensemble, that's heavy on the drums, let me know about them. In general though, even if it has lyrics, I'm fine with it, I just find lyrics really distracting, so when I'm picking music, I tend to avoid them.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
My friends and family.
Good tasty food.
Being active in the outdoors.
Getting enough sleep.
Board games and card games.
Colours, and colourful things.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Whatever book I have been reading lately, people, the future, the past, the present.... All kinds of stuff really...

This seems like a good place to stick random stuff, so I'm going to use it for that.

While I am a very emotional person on the inside, I'm in the process of learning how to express positive emotions like love and happiness; and I'm very bad at expressing or even acknowledging negative emotions. It's been so long since I was last angry that I can't remember when it was. I still feel the emotions, I just have a hard time expressing them.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Hanging out with friends is the most common Friday night activity at the moment. I don't really like bars or clubs, so bring on the board games!
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Humm, I think all I should say is that I'll answer most questions people ask me, because I tend not to be super private, and feel questions should be answered.

I also don't understand hints, or most slang. You should say what you mean, or, at the very least, mean what you say. Because I won't understand that just because you say you want me to do A, it really means do B... My mind just doesn't work that way. What you say is what it is. Nothing more, or less. I will take it literally and at face value......

I have been told that I am too nice and also that I am too happy and cheerful. I don't really understand how someone can be too nice, happy, or cheerful, but yeah, if you don't like nice, happy, cheerful people, you have been warned...

I'm also generally very slow and cautious when it comes to relationships and physical contact with new people. I'm a pretty tactile person, touch is very important to me; but I'm overly careful when it comes to other people's boundaries, until I get to know them. So if you feel like I'm being too cautious, feel free to shake things up a bit. I don't generally flirt on the first date, as I prefer to get to know someone at least a little bit first.
You should message me if
Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
You want to talk to me. I'm quite happy to talk to just about anyone, I'm very friendly and easy going.

If you want someone to go skiing, hiking, camping, or diving with, I'm totally the person you should message!

If you want to go on outdoor adventures, of just about any type!

I do generally respond to just about everyone that messages me, but I don't send a lot of first contact messages. So if I seem interesting, just say hello, and we can start a conversation from there.
