My self-summary
Live in the moment. Follow your bliss.

"The big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure." Joseph Campbell
What I’m doing with my life
I love to be outdoors, whether I am hiking (I often borrow my neighbor's dog and bring her along), biking, snow shoeing, skiing, being in, on, or near water, etc...

I am a therapist/social worker at a community mental health clinic. I have my masters in clinical social work from the Smith college social work program. I find myself being invested in the growth of others and in my own growth whether that be through listening, empathizing, learning, advocating, educating, supervising, reading, etc. In general, I tend toward conversations revolving around philosophy and life. (So, if your emotions are tied to the outcome of a Red Sox game, we probably won't work.)

That being said, I'm not opposed to going to a sporting event to have a good time, drink beer, and soak in the excitement. I also love outdoor festivals of all kinds, especially music outdoors, farmers markets, etc.

I love to travel domestically and internationally. I moved to the US from London, England when I was eight. I am fortunate to have a diverse group of friends who have lived in a number of interesting places around the world, and I have taken the opportunity to travel to some of these places. I would like to do a lot more traveling, with a partner. I recently watched a movie called "The Way", which made me want to walk El Camino de Santiago, in Spain.

I have a farm share through the CSA at a neighboring farm. I love knowing that the delicious food I eat comes from right next door. The CSA opened on May 3 for the season, and I picked up some fiddleheads, and some of the best asparagus in the world :) I like that the CSA also motivates me to learn how to cook new things. I usually grow one or two things, like sun gold cherry tomatoes or snap peas, because I like watching the snap peas climb their structure over time, and I love the smell of the residue that the tomato plant leaves on my hands after I pick and eat the tomatoes.

I love to sing. I started singing into a toy karaoke machine when I was 4 years old, I stopped singing by the time I was a teenager, and then I sort of rediscovered it in my recent adult life. I sing while my music playing friends (who I met through community guitar lessons) play guitar, mandolin, bass, etc... I wouldn't say that I am necessarily good, but I enjoy it.

What I want to focus on for the near future is becoming fluent in Spanish, arranging my work life so that I can do more international travel (whether that be connected to my work or not), and improving on my singing, guitar playing, or maybe learning how to play the fiddle?

I'm looking forward to summer in New England. Weekends at Lake Winnipesaukee or the beach, and some lounging with a good book and a cocktail. Also, I recently played the game Crimes Against Humanity for the first time with a group of friends and I laughed so hard that my face hurt afterwards :)
I’m really good at
Listening
Communicating
Being self-aware
Having good judgement
Getting engrossed in a book, a movie, an album
Taking emotional risks
Mediating/Facilitating groups/Coordinating/Problem Solving
Playing Tennis (I played college tennis)
Interior decorating (so I've been told)

I'm working on getting better at:
Cooking
Singing while playing an instrument
Admitting when I'm wrong
Taking photos
Thinking ahead/being organized
Getting my oil changed regularly
The first things people usually notice about me
Friendly
Listening
Curious
Eyes
Hair
And, I suppose when you meet someone who you connect well with, they notice things about you beyond what people usually notice.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I think that there is a time and a place for almost any type of music or food:

But I never really get sick of eating Indian, Thai, curries in general, Sushi, chocolate, cheese, fresh vegetables.

The most recent show I went to was The Carolina Chocolate Drops in April, before that I'd seen Keb' Mo', Anais Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Ozomatli. I'm going to see the Avett Bros and Old Crow Medicine Show in June.
My music playing friends and I are working on singing/playing some Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, Eileen Jewel songs
I've been discovering, listening to some Indie Rock type bands lately thru pandora stations like Mumford and Sons, or thru listening to the River

I used to read one book at a time. Now I read about 3 at a time: rotating philosophy, fiction, and non-fiction. Most recently I'm chipping away at. 1. "Thoughts Without a Thinker" (A book about Buddhism and Psychotherapy). 2. "Mountains Beyond Mountains" by Tracy Kidder (A biography about an amazing man/doctor named Paul Farmer). 3. I'm listening to "The Help" on tape in my car 4. I recently finished reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver (I absolutely loved reading it and I love all of her books)

I tend to like movies that are both moving and make me laugh. I like dark humor, great cinematography, and I notice subtlety. Anything from obscure indie films to big blockbusters. What come to mind as favorites are:
The very exotic marigold hotel
The way
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Lost in Translation
The Big Lebowski
Pride and Prejudice
The Darjeeling Limited
Sideways
I <3 Huckabees
Etc...
The six things I could never do without
Sunlight and fresh air
Quality Food
Love
New experiences/new ideas
Stories (true and imaginary)
Music

I would be sad without:
A guitar or a piano
A Bicycle
A Rice cooker
Chocolate and curry
I spend a lot of time thinking about
One of the jokes Jon Stewart recently made
How would I say that in Spanish again?
What instrument am I hearing in this song?
How do I reconcile the conflicting thoughts/ feelings that I have about US government and culture?
When will I go to Kripalu for a yoga retreat?
What is the most helpful and effective way for me to say what I am thinking right now?
How does what has happened in the past inform the present?
Liberation Theology
How can I help my openly racist therapy clients shift their perspective?
How can I spend my time working in a wider variety of roles and settings?
How can I have more flexibility or the means to do more traveling internationally? How can I get summers off?
I should get a dishwasher. It conserves water better, and I hate doing dishes.
...And a 24 hour on call massage therapist?
Next time I really am going to compost that, not throw it in the trash!
Why do I like Don on Mad Men despite the fact that he does terrible things?
Should I move to Colorado? or the Northwest?
How can I channel the courage, motivation, passion of Paul Farmer in "Mountains Beyond Mountains"?
Also, how it's the littlest, most subtle, random, and unexpected events and conversations that become the most hilarious, interesting, and beautiful.
On a typical Friday night I am
Laughing, visiting with friends
Cooking/eating good food
Drinking a good beer or glass of wine
Engrossed in a movie
Packing or planning for a weekend adventure
Singing at a coffee shop with my music playing friends
Finding out if there is any live music or something else entertaining happening this weekend that sparks my interest
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
"A lifetime without Love is of no account. Love is the Water of Life. Drink it down with heart and soul!...
If I love myself I love you. If I love you I love myself." Rumi

I'm an open person, and I'm happy to share when the time is right.
