I am geeky, intellectual, and amazing.

My Self-Summary

I was a geek before geeky was cool.

No, really. When I was 7 years old my best friend and I played Mega Man on the playground by tucking our hands into our coat sleeves and pretending we had arm cannons.

Totally. Not. Cool.

But I'm geeky and cool now, so that's OK.

I'm a font of random knowledge of dubious practical utility. My favorite recent random fact is that toothpaste manufacturers add a foaming agent to toothpaste because people feel like foamy things are working better. Fucking people.

I consider myself a skeptic, but I'm sad that most skeptics have adopted beliefs as rigid as those they probably rebelled against in the first place.

I'm radically pro-technology. I get giddy thinking about how much the world has changed since I was younger and how much more change I'll be privileged to see.

I pride myself on being able to balance my emotions with logic, and on being able to consider all sides of an argument. I'm passionate about my beliefs, but I'm not easily swayed by short-sighted propaganda, even when it seems to coincide with my opinions. I've found that most "causes" are so single mindedly focused on pushing one issue or agenda that they leave no room for the dissent, debate and compromise that are required to function in human society.

My views on things rarely fit into neatly defined boxes. We will probably disagree on some issues. I'm ok with that if you are.

I have an amazing girlfriend, SuperEmmy. We met on OkCupid over two years ago and recently moved to downtown Madison from central Illinois. I love her to death, but two people is not a social circle; it's a social line. That's where you come in. I'm tired of not having friends I can call up when I'm bored on a Thursday afternoon.

We don't necessarily come as a pair. We're not one of those weirdo couples that only has friends as a couple and speaks of "our" opinions and activities like some sort of freakish hivemind. We are, however, both awesome, and we tend to get along with the same sorts of people.

What I’m doing with my life

I work at a local coffee shop. It's a fun job, but not what I want to do forever. As I get older and my peers settle into more typical schedules, I'm beginning to understand the value of a job with weekends off when it comes to making time for a social life.

I'm very focused on the present and not much of a planner. I don't have many specific life goals, and for the longest time I've felt like that was a deficiency. Mostly because I was told that was a deficiency. Lately I've come to peace with the fact that I'm 26 years old and don't know what I want to do for the rest of my life. In fact, I'm kind of happier because of it.

I’m really good at

Cooking.

Remembering trivia.

Tasting beer.

Writing.

Fixing computers.

The first things people usually notice about me

The hair or the beard. Or some combination of both.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Waking the Moon, Winterlong, Mortal Love, Generation Loss, Glimmering, Black Light (Elizabeth Hand); The Dark Tower series (Stephen King); Neverwhere, American Gods (Neil Gaiman), Dune (Frank Herbert); Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Philip K. Dick); Brave New World (Aldous Huxley); Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse-Five (Kurt Vonnegut); Fight Club, Survivor, Invisible Monsters (Chuck Palahniuk); Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim (David Sedaris); The Areas of My Expertise, More Information Than You Require (John Hodgman)

Movies: The Royal Tennenbaums, Amelie, Fight Club, Taxi Driver, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Magnolia, Pi, The Big Lebowski

Music: Neutral Milk Hotel, godspeed you! black emperor; A Silver Mt. Zion, Molasses, HRSTA, Do Make Say Think, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Black Ox Orkestar, 65daysofstatic, Battles, Belle & Sebastian, The Decemberists, Stars, Broken Social Scene, Scissor Sisters, Daft Punk, Four Tet, Justice, Queens of the Stone Age, Devendra Banhart, Blonde Redhead, The Avett Brothers, Neko Case

Food: It's easier to list what I don't like - Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Pickles, Olives, Beans, Peas. Most other things are fair game.

The six things I could never do without

-My phone and a data plan
-High speed internet access
-Music
-Filtered or bottled water
-A functional kitchen
-Probably my girlfriend, but she'd punch me if I said something that cheesily romantic. I'd punch myself too.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Game design, social structures and motivation in massively multiplayer games/virtual worlds. Not even kidding.

What I want to do with my life. I said I'm happy not knowing; that doesn't mean I don't think about it or that I never want to know.

Developing better habits and routines.

On a typical Friday night I am

I don't really have a typical Friday night. I like going out and spending time with people, but I'm as likely do do that on a Tuesday as on a Friday. When I do go out, I like places with a quieter atmosphere, obscure stuff on the jukebox and a good selection of interesting beer.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

See that badge that says "More Kinky" down at the bottom of my profile? It's there for a reason. My girlfriend and I are into some stuff that's admittedly relatively tame in this, the great age of the internet, but it would still turn a few heads.

It doesn't particularly matter if you're kinky or not, but if you're weirded out now, it probably won't get better later.

You should message me if

You're looking for an awesome new friend or two, especially if you live downtown or hang out here frequently.

Your idea of a good time includes good beer, good movies, bad movies, profound conversation, profoundly silly conversation or any combination of the above.
