My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm currently working on my Ph.D. When I get it, I'll be Dr. Jones. I'm going to wear a fedora (the badass kind) and a leather jacket, carry a bullwhip with me everywhere, and I'll make people say my name with an accent. It's going to be awesome!

Disclaimer: The fedora will only be worn as part of the Indiana Jones costume. It will in no way become part of my everyday dress.

Also I have two cats, and these two links are pretty representative of how I act around them:,
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Determining the ages of A-type stars by measuring their sizes and comparing them to evolutionary models... aka getting a Ph.D. in Astronomy (if you're curious, I'm at Georgia State)

I've also been losing weight the last few months. 45 lb. since April! So, that's exciting!
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Taking a joke - I have been the butt of a great many good-natured (I hope!) jokes over the years. Because of this, I have perfected my "fake-sad reaction". You have to see it in action to be properly impressed, but the basic elements are an "awww," a drooped head, slumped shoulders, and a slow walk away... sometimes an Eeyore-esque "oookay" instead of the "awww"... sometimes both.

Public speaking - Especially if I know my material and my audience.

Feeding my cats (apparently) - They're always begging me to do this, and they seem so satisfied when I do. I have to assume I'm good at it :).

Knowing that there exists the perfect word for what I want to say but not being able to think of it until hours after it's relevant.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
That I have headphones in (listening to podcasts, typically). I assume this is what people first notice about me, because I never get any random conversations from people on the train like my friends do.

It's not really the "first thing" that was noticed about me, but the following was once said of me in a course evaluation for a lab I taught: "Jeremy is the titties." High praise indeed!
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
I'm a big fan of things in the sci-fi, fantasy, and superhero genres. I especially like these franchises: Doctor Who (before you ask, the answer is Capaldi), Star Trek (also, before you ask, it's either Picard or DS9), Star Wars, and the MCU (if Cap isn't your favorite Avenger, you are literally anti-American).

I also appreciate goofy comedies (Parks & Rec and Brooklyn-99 being my current favorites) and political dramas (The West Wing being the best one, of course).

My perfect movie is Independence Day. If the mention of that movie brings this scene to mind, message me NOW.

I generally prefer TV to movies, especially now-a-days where TV shows are more comfortable with long-form story-telling.

Webcomics- xkcd, smbc, Questionable Content

I try to read two books a month (one audio, one regular). My favorite genres are Sci-fi, Fantasy, 20th Century History (although, I try to branch out to other eras), and Science. I'm currently reading Proof, about the history and production of booze. It's super interesting! If you like anything dealing with zombies at all, do yourself a favor and go listen to the World War Z audio book.

I listen to 40+ of these things, so it's hard to choose favorites. How about some superlatives?
Most fun: Thrilling Adventure Hour
Most pun: The Gist
Sexiest: Savage Lovecast
Most Judicious: You'd think it'd be Amicus, but you'd be WRONG... it's Slate's Political Gabfest (you're welcome Emily Bazelon)
Most revolutionary: Revolutions... it's all about various revolutions in history... it's a joke, you see... ok, I'm done now

Video Games -
I'm a sucker for BioWare RPGs. I also like Civ games. I'm currently suffering from a Kerbal Space Program relapse... It's as much fun as it sounds (or more fun if you wrongly don't think it sounds like that much fun).

I mainly listen to music to remove myself from the noise of the outside world (usually so I can focus on work). I primarily listen to music without lyrics of the following types: TV/movie/video game music, fast-paced celtic-y music (ala Riverdance), or electronic-y/pop-y versions of classical songs. When I'm feeling like words, I'll throw in some Earth, Wind, and Fire or some Michael Jackson.

Fun fact: I've avoided the South Park Game of Thrones episode because I don't want to think about weiners whenever I listen to the theme song.

You know all that food that's terrible for you? The kind with all the fat and grease and sugar? That's the food I prefer. Burgers are (obviously) the best food in existence, followed closely by chocolate chip cookies. Honorable mention for Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream. My alcoholic beverage of choice is cider.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
In order of increasing couldneverdowithoutedness,

-Caffeine: Especially in diet soda form. (Update: I'm currently trying to cut back on my caffeine intake... I'm finding it difficult to do without, though :( )
-Google: No explanation necessary
-My phone: I can see the Internet from (almost) ANYWHERE!!!!!
-Podcasts: So much knowledge and/or entertainment in such a tiny package
-Internet: Seriously, how did people exist in the pre-Internet era?
-My brain: I need it to be
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Light. It's all wavey until it hits something, which it does all particle-ly. Likewise, particles... they do the same thing, but differently.

Why the word feminism seems to have a stigma associated with it. To the point where people who have all the views of your standard feminist, but refuse to call themselves (or even think of themselves) as a feminist. For the record, I consider myself a feminist.

Why people are sometimes referred to as either "female" or "male" in non-clinical/biological situations. I mean, are "woman" or "man" not good enough words? Whenever I hear "female" I imagine a Ferengi saying it: feeee-male.

Sexuality. Specifically, all the things that people like to do with each other and why, why people are attracted to different people, etc.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Hanging with friends, doing the nerdiest thing possible...

playing Dungeons & Dragons

Update: I don't currently have a D&D group, but I'm starting another one up soon, so that's exciting!

Other typical Friday/weekend evening activities include:
-Game nights with friends
-Chilling at home with my kitties, netflix, my laptop, and/or a book
-Occasionally going out with folks
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I get really emotionally invested in tv shows, to the point where I will tear up, or even cry at times of high emotional impact. I also squee whenever two characters in a tv show finally fucking kiss for the first time after a billion seasons of sexual-tension-build-up.

Bonus 2nd most private thing I'm willing to admit: I'm glad Pluto isn't considered a planet. That decision was totally justified.

...this comic resonates with you: cut the plastic rings that drinks often come in so that animals don't get their head stuck in them and die
...Netflix frequently asks you if you're still there want to watch [insert currently running TV show here] with me though Colbert's last show was the most perfect thing ever.
