I am intelligent, idealistic, and passionate.

My Self-Summary

I'm a grad student who loses a lot of sleep drinking coffee, reading, occasionally baking, and generally entertaining my cats. School takes up too much time, but I love settling down at a coffee shop in the afternoon to catch up with a magazine or a good book. I don't get out hiking often enough, but I love it when I can. Occasionally I still get out my cello, though I haven't taken lessons since college.

I've been in Charlotte just long enough to have started to discover restaurants and places I love.

What I’m doing with my life

My plan goes something like this:

1. 24 years of school (give or take)
2. ???
3. Profit!

Currently in (1). No idea about (2). At the moment, trying to enjoy my free time when I've got it. Always looking for good venues with local music.

I’m really good at

The only thing I'm better at than suggesting good books to read is suggesting good beers to try (for anyone). I can throw together a pretty great party when I'm in the mood. I'm a pretty good listener, but, honestly, better at talking. Also, I'm probably the best navigator you'll ever have in your passenger's seat.

Occasionally I've been referred to as a "genius cook" by my friends.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm a bit of a geek.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books... Anything by David Foster Wallace (esp. Infinite Jest) or Cormac McCarthy. Alice in Wonderland, Calvin & Hobbes, Breakfast of Champions, High Fidelity. Some random fantasy and... yeah. Sookie Stackhouse. Normally I hate vampire novels, though.

Movies... Delicatessen, City of Lost Children (okay, Amelie too). High Fidelity. Office Space inspired me to go to grad school. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is pretty fantastic. I also just love samurai movies and the general category of "weird European stuff with subtitles".

Music... The Pixies, Pearl Jam, Andrew Bird, Cake, Thievery Corporation, The Clash, R.E.M. (the old stuff, anyway), and all the stuff I played in college orchestra. Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Stephane Grapelli. Tom Waits.

Food... Sushi, London broil, tapas, cheese grits, East Carolina barbecue, real bagels, and breakfast sandwiches with sausage. Polenta. Crepes. Asparagus. Salads that are too delicious to be doused with dressing, meat, or cheese.

The six things I could never do without

1. My sisters, my adorable nieces and nephew, and the rest of the family.
2. Music
3. At least one day away from research every week.
4. Books! Preferably 3-4 at a time...
5. My cats
6. A laptop, sadly.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Conference paper deadlines.

Super powers. Though I always come to the conclusion that levitation would be the best.

Bad puns. I try to keep a good supply in reserve.

The politics of division and how to reverse an unfortunate trend in our current society. This leads me to, yes, blog about politics. Occasionally.

On a typical Friday night I am

@ Flying Saucer (though Thursday is really Saucer night..), playing poker, eating something delicious, or just sitting around watching Netflix. Sometimes frantically working on a publication or a funding deadline. Gallery crawl in NoDa when I remember it...

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Every once in a while, I'll admit that I love dancing.

You should message me if

You don't need me to tell you what to do.
