My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Prepare yourself for an extraordinary date! And then after you've been disappointed with THAT guy, spend some time with me. I'm just your average, ordinary smart-aleck. My friends think I'm funny and smart, and who am I to argue?

I love to dance, and I actually have a sense of rhythm and won't step on your feet. How great is that?

More than anything else, I value a woman with a sense of humor. Okay, looks help, too. And intelligence. But a woman who's beautiful and brilliant and always serious ... I'm not drawn to that combo platter.

I don't know about you, but I'm finding it a bit tricky to date at this stage in life. I try to be fun and funny, but I'm sensitive to the fact that all of us who've reached middle age and are single again have complicated histories. We all may have dreams of finding the ideal partner and living happily ever after, but it takes time to see what works even when you're in your 20s or 30s. Add in the complexities of families, the pain of failed relationships or the death of a spouse, different career paths and goals ... well, you can fill in the rest, right?

I try to keep things light, but I'm a pretty serious person underneath it all. I have a great deal of respect for the effort so many women have put into keeping their kids healthy, safe and loved in the face of difficult marriages. I know the last thing most of you need is a self-centered jerk to waste your time. I'm intent on being kind and thoughtful -- I like to have fun, but I'm not a "player."

On a much shallower note: For body type, I picked "average" because my body right now is ... average. I could exaggerate and claim "fit" or "athletic" but that's aspirational, not truthful. I've been in that category before, but I've got maybe 10 pounds to shed. Give me a few months and I'll be back in the "fit and toned" or "athletic and awe-inspiring" or "gangstas cross to the other side of the street when they see me coming" categories.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Having fun, thinking about a lot of stuff -- from the ridiculous to the sublime, working hard, meeting people, expanding my horizons, and trying to figure out how to write an OK Cupid profile that attracts a woman in a similar space as me.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Writing, playing music, interviewing people (former reporter), picking up on subtleties, dancing, staying current, back rubs and foot rubs.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I really have no idea. I'll start doing a survey, if you insist.

Okay, I just thought of something: I have a low voice, lower perhaps than you would expect for a guy who's not built like, say, an NFL lineman.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
These are samplings, not a complete list:

Authors: Michael Chabon, Elmore Leonard, Charles Dickens, John McPhee, Joan Didion, Raymond Carver, Mark Twain, Joyce Carol Oates.

Movies: It's a Wonderful Life, Pulp Fiction, Fargo, Annie Hall, North by Northwest, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Rushmore.

Music: Peter Gabriel, Annie Lennox, the Pretenders, Beatles, Shostakovich, Beethoven, Bartok, John Adams, Todd Rundgren, The Smiths, and virtually all Motown and Stax artists.

Food: Mainly vegetarian and fish. Thai, Italian, French, Indian.

I don't have a TV by choice. If I did, I'd end up watching lots of pointless shows and wasting time. So I just avoid putting that temptation in my life.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Air, iPod, stereo, water, food, clothes. I'd add "you" to that list, but that would make me sound like a crazy co-dependent person, wouldn't it? Plus I don't even know which "you" I'm referring to, do I?
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
How to be a fun date, but thoughtful, too.

How to help my 19-year-old daughter and 17-year-old son transition into adulthood feeling secure and happy.

How to keep building on my renewed sense of optimism and excitement about what life has to offer.

Why so many women on OKC have photos of themselves behind the wheel of a car. Is that to impress visitors that you KNOW HOW TO DRIVE?

Why young people use the word "perfect" to mean "good" or "okay" or "got it," as in:
(me to waiter) "I'll have a tuna fish sandwich with fruit salad, please."
(waiter's response) "Perfect!"
or (to admin assistant) "I'll take that 10 a.m. slot on the 16th, please."
(admin's response) "Perfect!"
What will they say when it's something far more complex that indeed is the perfect answer to a challenging situation:
"I'll drop off the car at 7, walk the three blocks to the T station, take it to the Harvard Square stop, hand the documents to Guido, meet you at 7:45 for a quick drink, dye my hair blond in your apartment and take the United flight to Bermuda at 10:43. You take the 8:10 flight the next morning."
"Okay."
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
I'm trying not to have too many "typical" Fridays anymore.
