"We use our eyes for seeing. Our field of vision reveals a limited space, something vaguely circular, which ends very quickly to left and right, and doesn't extend very far up or down. If we squint, we can manage to see the end of our nose; if we raise our eyes, we can see there's and up; if we lower them, we can see there's a down. If we turn our head in one direction, then in another, we don't even manage to see completely everything there is around us; we have to twist our bodies round to see properly what was behind us. Our gaze travels through space and gives us the illusion of relief and distance. That is how we construct space, with an up and a down, a left and a right, an in front and a behind, a near and a far."
-Georges Perec

Invincible

Nov 6, 2009

When will he learn,
That boy who seems carefree
That Death comes for everyone
No matter who they be
No one lives forever
They cannot escape their fate
We all eventually pass on
And leave this world of hate
None of us are invincible
Although we sometimes lie
And say that we're immortal
And that we'll never die
But our bodies will expire
Our minds will turn to dust
And even if made of metal
Eventually, we would rust
But this boy has grown up believing
That he will always last
Although most all around him
Knew he was dying fast
His strength of mind would push him
To fight against all doubt
But his curse would slowly weaken him
Both inside and out
Every day a battle
A struggle for every breath
An epic duel each morning
Waking to stare at Death
But to this boy it seemed
That nothing could take him down
He always seemed so joyous
His face never turned a frown
Although he knew his health
Was creeping, slipping slowly away
He lived his life to the fullest
No worry, fear, or dismay

Now that was long ago
The boy, now a man, can see
That Death is knocking at his door
To bring him to his knees
And yet this man still smiles
He'll no longer defend
For years of pain and suffering
Will finally come to an end
He'll stand and look Death
One last time in the eyes
Then embrace Him in his arms
Before he fades and dies
This story may seem sad
A tragic tale indeed
Fighting a constant war
And never taking the lead
But do not mourn for this man
He has left this world behind
And is now forever invincible
And the power of his mind
Remains as strong as it was in life
His strength never did fall
Because of those who stayed by his side
And made him feel ten feet tall
So always keep a positive mind
And when you feel sad and down
Remember that carefree invincible boy
Whose face never did frown
