I love “mindfuck” books or movies that force you to think or review
your ethical values:
time travel, self-aware
AIs,
transhumanism, really weird
aliens… As soon as I’m done, I want to check the internet for all
the subtleties I’ve missed, re-read/re-watch it, and talk about it.
And if there’s decent character development along the way, all the
better. I’m also partial to big-budget geek movies with good action
scenes, and
wuxia.
My favourite books include pretty much anything by Neil Gaiman or
Terry Pratchett, Zelazny’s
Amber saga,
Jonathan
Strange & Mr Norrell,
The Hyperion Cantos,
Do
Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, and
Gödel, Escher,
Bach. On the internet, I’ve been catching up on Yudkowski’s
LessWrong
Sequences and
Harry Potter and the Methods
of Rationality with great interest.
In comic books and manga, I have a taste for the magical girl
genre, plus some European fantasy and a bit of seinen. And I'll
happily watch the likes of
Studio Ghibli.
As for music, I like a hodgepodge of
indie rock groups (or, often, just
individual tracks) and
symphonic rock to get me through
early rainy mornings.
In PC gaming, I prefer roleplaying games (
Planescape:
Torment is a favourite) and sandbox action games, with a
little RTS and a little FPS on the side. I also like various very
innovative or atmospheric games, often indie (
Limbo,
Portal,
Psychonauts,
Braid). I am not on
any MMO. I enjoy boardgames but have not had enough experience to
form strong preferences.
Magic: The Gathering occupies
more of my time that I'm willing to admit.
I like Italian food and various kinds of Asian food, especially
spicy. Also fruit juices, which make up for my rather low alcohol
consumption.
