I am mad, bad, and dangerous to know(?).

My Self-Summary

I joined OKCupid because I like tests. Yes, I'm one of those weird people who fills out questionnaires for fun. Designing
them is part of my job. I do have a life outside tests, though: I'm into books, all aspects of the arts, travelling, dance, socialising, and exploring new things.

Other random things about me -
Although I'm surrounded by nerds in my everday life, and I have quite a few nerdy interests (e.g., I'm in acadaemia, my brother's a re-enacter, I spend a lot of time doing statistics, I've read some speculative fiction) people often comment that I don't seem to be a nerd myself. Weird, huh?

I own 74 pairs of shoes.

What I’m doing with my life

Mostly I'm just getting a progressively better understanding of who I am and where I fit in the world. I'm a psychologist, so I'm into that kind of thing.

I have a PhD in psychology, and work in research. This week I'm actually not procrastinating about it (amazing!). Apart from spending a long time typing answers in little boxes on this site, that is :-)

I sing a lot. I perform in musical theatre, and very recently in opera even though I never thought I liked opera very much. Turns out those opera cliches aren't necessarily true.

I’m really good at

Spending a lot of time reading. I blame my parents - they're both writers.

Singing. I have no idea where I got this from - everyone else in my family is tone-deaf.

Listening. I adore meeting new people and finding out what makes them tick.

Research. Finding out stuff about stuff and working out how it works (or why it doesn't).

The first things people usually notice about me

I don't know, you'd probably have to ask some people I've just met.

I can be fairly enthusiastic about life, and I dress like a performing artist (scary, huh?).

I've been told I look like Catherine Zeta-Jones, Diana Rigg, and Lisa-Marie Presley. Not sure how I feel about that last one.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(a)Books: Let's try authors.
Fiction: Jeffrey Eugenides, Louis de Bernieres, Margaret Atwood, Jeanette Winterson, Donna Tartt, DH Lawrence, Herman Hesse, Aldous Huxley, Gene Wolfe, Iain Banks
Psychology: Mihaly Csziksentmihalyi, Victor Frankl, Scott Peck, Martin Seligman

(b)Film: In America, The Philadelphia Story, Vanilla Sky, Trust, Withnail & I, Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Lars von Trier films upset me but I go to see them anyway.

(c)Music: Sondheim, Bernstein, Cole Porter, Verdi, Puccini, Faure
I spend so much time learning and making music that I don't listen to music for fun much, which is a bit sad.
Fun music: Claire Bowditch, The Cat Empire, Kate Bush, The White Stripes, The Decemberists, George, The Red Paintings, Modest Mouse, Dave Matthews

(d)Food: Passionfruit, marzipan, sour citrus, sorbet, cashews (not all at once). I like discovering new types of food.

The six things I could never do without

My cat (who behaves like a dog), interesting people, the arts, an environment where learning is encouraged, internet access.

You're right, I can't count.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Everything, and entirely too much of the time. I think a lot about psychology, and how people construct the world.

On a typical Friday night I am

There isn't really a typical Friday night for me. Sometimes when I have time I go out to the theatre or a movie, or go see some live music. I'm not really a 'going to clubs person'.

More often than not, though, I'm either in a show/ doing a gig on a Friday night, or racing for a work deadline.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm an extrovert, so I don't like to think I have many secrets. That probably just means I'm in denial more than most people :-)

You should message me if

You feel like it.
