I feel everyone takes this section too lightly... They make tedious
lists that don't really convey anything about who that person is,
other than what they enjoy. I am going to rectify this by only
giving the top 5 in each list, and why they are meaningful to
me.
Music-
Pearl Jam -
Wasted
Reprise - I used to work at a prison as a correctional officer.
The job was horrible, my town was small, and I was wasting away. I
not only heard this song, but listened to it, and it inspired me.
It inspired me to get up and go and look, to seek something worth
having. To this end I joined the USAF. It hasn't been a upward
spiral by any means, but I know that I've grown as a man, and more
importantly, as a person.
Foo Fighters
-
Times Like
These - I won't lie and say I've been extremely social all my
life. I've always loved people but I honestly can't stand being
around most of them. This song makes me feel bigger than life, but
it also makes me feel grounded. It reminds me to open myself and
love, no matter what the past may have held. It tells me that
there's tomorrow and to make the most of it, and where you may have
screwed up once, there will be a chance to make it right.
Lynard
Skynard -
Simple Man - If you've ever listened
to this song, you know how spiritual and emotional it is. Every
time I listen to this song, it reminds me that the best path to
happiness is simplicity. More than that though, it's also a
connection to my home (I'm originally from Ga.), and that in itself
makes it worth its weight in gold.
Audioslave -
Doesn't
Remind Me - Hey, shit happens, and sometimes you just gotta
take a break from said shit. While you're out there living your
life, make sure you stay true to yourself, but also remember to
just sit back and smell the roses. The world's a beautiful place,
take it slow, and enjoy every little thing life has to offer.
The
Smashing Pumpkins -
Appels + Oranjes - Everything
we know as fact can be turned upside down in an instant. It's
personal experience for me. Eventually you learn to just walk on
water, instead of trying to swim in it. Life is gonna throw you
surprises, be prepared, and take it all in stride. Adaptability is
one of the secrets to a happy life, and this song reminds me of
that, in a sensual, artistic, way.
Movies -
SLC Punk - This
is a great, albeit sad, movie. This movie touches on so many
aspects of our culture, that anyone who DOESN'T take something life
altering from it either is oblivious, or wasn't paying attention.
It reminds me that life's too short to scoff at the world, and
again, just be who you are, but also, be responsible, and probably
most importantly, cherish those who are important to you.
My Neighbor
Totoro - A absolutely charming, and extremely beautiful movie.
Every time I watch it I'm filled with a childish wonder that I
think is too oft forgotten in today's society. There is absolutely
a time to be responsible. But there is also a time to dance, sing,
and imagine that faeries flitter from flower to flower, and inside
one special lamp a djinn waits to be awakened to grant wishes for a
worthy master.
5
Centimeters Per Second - A inspirational romance with almost a
film noir type feel to it. Love can be such a fleeting, fickle
thing, but when we find someone who is truly special to us, we must
hold on to them with every ounce of strength in our souls, or else
we risk alienating ourselves from love forever.
The
Princess Bride - Comedy, Romance, Wit... Masked Heroes... It's
like they took all the things I enjoy and aspire towards, put them
in a pot, mixed it up, and added Carry Elwes! It really dosn't get
much better than this.
Kikis
Delivery Service - A simple, yet elegant movie, the underlying
theme is that when you believe in yourself and have courage
anything at all is possible. It's something great to keep in mind,
and to take to heart.
Television - Heroes and House are amazing, I love
anime and I especially adore
Hayao
Miyazaki's films.
Games - Ok, I'll just throw it out there. I love video games. I
also love card and board games, but not like I do video games. Do I
expect someone to sit around and play games with me all the time...
no. Do I expect someone to tolerate me sitting around playing games
all the time... no. When I play, do I occasionally expect them to
play games with me?... yes. In return will I be willing to (insert
activity of choice here) with them?... Of Course! Relationships are
a compromise. You can't expect me to do something you aren't
willing to do yourself. I enjoy going to bars and clubs, skiing and
swimming, so on and so forth, but I can enjoy all those things
alone too. If you're not willing to do something you may or may not
particularly enjoy, don't come to me and attempt to get me to do
something I may or may not feel like doing at the time. I hope we
have an understanding here.
Books - I actually really loved the
Harry Potter, and
Sword of Truth series, and
I'm sad those are over.
Enders Game, and the
Shadow Series by
Orson Scott
Card was great, however the
Ender Series itself was a bit too
mature for light reading.
Piers Anthony is my favorite
author, and
Robert Frost my favorite poet. I
enjoy pretty much anything by
Orson Scott Card,
Lloyd Alexander,
myths and epics (
Beowulf,
Gilgamesh,
The Iliad,
The Odyssey), and historic Christian
literature (
The Divine Comedy,
Paradise Lost,
Paradise Regained), and
some classic literature, such as that by
Alexander Dumas, and
The Canterbury
Tales, but not anything by Shakespeare, oddly. NOTE: I just
added my favorite fairy tale to my journal it's The White Cat by
Madame la Comtesse d'Aulnoy. Read it, it's pretty amazing (esp. all
you Princess Bride fans out there!)
Food - I've been neglecting this for awhile now...
Steak and
Sushi. Love me some steak and/or sushi.
Eating both in the same meal is like a orgasm for your mouth.
