Everyone Vote or die...except you DC

Aug 9, 2009

I don't bother researching facts as those tend to get in the way of a good opinion...so I present this totally baseless post:

So its a popular position here in DC to be all in the DC voting rights movement.  As a resident in the district for 7 months, I feel I am overly qualified to add my voice to the sea of other undistinguishable stupid people in the debate.

Why should DC not have representation in Congress?

...Marion Barry

Ok no thats too easy..though tempting nonetheless.  In reality, the people here should celebrate their 2nd class citizen status.  Do you really want a pompous congressman and 2 senators to add to the noise in our federal government?  So we can get some pork money funneled our way? Say no to DC voting rights.  I say we should continue to be taxed without representation.

DC itself is transitory in nature...has anyone ever met someone who was born here?  Its a rest stop in people's lives.  Oh maybe some federal employees who actually live in DC (suck it virginia) maybe here for the long term, but do their hearts lie elsewhere?  Although I claim no love for California post Prop 8 fiasco and the pending bankruptcy, I will still use it as a reference to distinguish myself as superior to everyone, particularly to northeastern people.  My pro teams are from San Diego, college in texas...DC is charming and I love the city and the vibe it has.  I want it to be better if only for myself interest.  However if I were to vote for a DC senator, I know its a good possibility I will not be a DC resident for his/her entire term.  Thus the contention is if a substantial portion of the population is temporary does it make sense to elect reprensentation to congress when their constituency changes over like every 4 years, how confused would that rep be?

DC stay unique and be proud.  Don't whore yourself back to Maryland, like some proposals I heard.  Nor is the well lets make our rep a full voting member, but not have senators.  Thats a crappy half-solution, its all or nothing.  And I say nothing.

...and seriously, Marion Barry, I mean really..come on now.
