My self-summary
I appreciate the importance of everyday acts of kindness and courtesy, like smiling at kids and keeping my distance regardless of how far below the speed limit the car ahead of me is driving. I also understand that kindness is contextual and relative.

The recent surge in the price of bitcoin didn't get me excited about bitcoin, but reminded me of all the ways in which we subtly (or not so subtly) transfer wealth between people without actually adding anything of value. Sometimes I wonder whether I'm really walking my own path or just so hell-bent on being my own person that I'm actually being contrary... who wants to be that guy?

Actions speak louder than words, but words can precipitate monumental action. It's essential to me that I communicate well and understand others, and to the extent that I can, I strive to facilitate harmony; you grok?

Self-expression is an important part of my life, although few would consider me an artistic person. The universe blessed me with an analytical mind, and an ability to understand and communicate complex ideas simply. I really enjoy learning about ways to live with purpose, and sharing what I've learned with those around me.

What I’m doing with my life
Trying to reconcile realities. Failing to escape my own hypocrisy. Earning money and not spending it.

Ok ok... I'm an actuarial analyst with a pensions consulting firm in the city. I get to do mathy stuff with computers all day long. /swoon

I try to get out and experience nature as often as I can. Hiking through the woods in places familiar or novel brings me great joy. Walking miles and miles through the streets of San Francisco is a decent substitute, especially on a warm(ish) night.

I've made it a goal in life to travel abroad at least once a year. There are so many beautiful places to see, and rich cultures to experience, and I would love to meet someone who shares this passion.

I spent much of my youth volunteering in one way or another, and am actively seeking ways to give back to my new community here in San Francisco.

Oh, and learning about anything and everything... and forgetting about it shortly thereafter. Always nice to have a study buddy. ;)
I’m really good at

laughing a lot about silly things.

getting lost in conversation and staying up far too late. Tomorrow-morning-me is not a fan of this habit.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Currently reading Our Oriental Heritage by Will Durant. A big fan of nonfiction and fiction alike, with a predilection for the philosophical or historical when the former, and science fiction & fantasy when the latter. That said, I also enjoy reading some heavy duty literature when I have the time and energy, but opportunities have been sparse as of late.

Movies: Not a huge fan of movies anymore. I'm really big on character development, and find that books and television series are much better suited toward that than are movies. That said, a few of my favorites include Shawshank Redemption, There Will Be Blood, and The Usual Suspects.

Shows: Typical stuff. Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Dr. Who, Homeland, Orange is the New Black, Breaking Bad, Dexter, True Blood, Ray Donovan, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, South Park, Downton Abbey, Sherlock, Star Trek TNG, Battlestar Galactica, Masters of Sex, etcetera.

Music: I'm drawn to songs with good melodies and powerful vocals, regardless of genre. Probably not heavy metal, and usually something more like Alternative, Rock, or dare I say, Pop. I listen to music because it is cathartic; it heightens my emotions, like a drug. I listen to songs on repeat, possibly in the high double digits. Should this be in my "most private" section instead?

Food: I try to eat raw, healthy foods. Fresh fruits, with pineapple being one of my favorites and papaya being one of my least favorites. A big fan of hummus, sometimes made with peanut butter instead of tahini. When I ate more meat, I was in love with a rare, juicy New York steak. I'm sort of overwhelmed with all the conflicting shoulds and should nots when it comes to the ethics and health benefits of certain foods, so this is in flux.
The six things I could never do without
Do what without? I could never... my job without excel.
...succeed without trying. without [insert necessary condition for life here]. and be loved without friends and family.
...feel fulfilled without giving back to my community.
...manage to beat minesweeper on expert mode.... oh wait... derp.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
the lies we tell ourselves to preserve the status quo.

how I can better live in accordance with my values.

whether or not I should say the really funny but inappropriate thing that just popped into my head.

lots of other things, often when I'm trying to get to sleep.
I’m looking for
  • Everybody
  • Ages 21–40
  • Near me
  • For new friends
You should message me if
you care less about what you do than about with whom you do it.

you seek to understand rather than take offense; realize misunderstanding is much more common than malice.

you're looking for a collaborator in life: someone with whom you can share ideas, experiences, personal growth, love.

Quote of the Moment

For such is the nature of men that, howsoever they may acknowledge many others to be more witty or more eloquent or more learned, yet they will hardly believe there be many so wise as themselves, for they see their own wit at hand and other men’s at a distance.

-Thomas Hobbes
