I am a geek, both recreationally, and professionally.
My Self-Summary
So my name is Evan, and I am a proud and unabashed geek, and from
what I've been told, a Nova Scotian who was born in Ontario and
lived there all his life. I'm into
gaming,
science-fiction,
trivia games, and physics. I
just finished a physics degree at the University of Waterloo, and
now I'm working on my B.Ed. at Brock University, planning on
becoming a physics teacher. It's an exceptionally rewarding gig, as
long as you're the type that enjoys it.
I'm also sort of a musician in my spare time; I've played
guitar for ten years, and I
sing. I'm not
terribly gifted with either, though I have a lot of fun with both.
I don't do it in any organized fashion, I've never recorded or
seriously written, though I was in choir one year in high school.
Tons of fun. I've also gotten into running and soccer in recent
months and years, in addition to my other casual sporting
endeavours.
I'm definitely of the laid-back sort; I'm really easy to get along
with and hard to offend, don't have an issue with going with the
flow, and will pretty much always give an honest answer to an
honest question. I'm a bit of a shyguy in larger groups, though,
but in a one-on-one situation, I tend to open up a lot more.
What I’m doing with my life
Enjoying it, mostly. I'm in teacher's college at Brock University
right now, and am counting down the days until I get out and can
start a teaching career. Other than that, keeping my head above
water in the deluge of assignments, and getting back into the swing
of running, looking to eventually crack a 20-minute 5K run.
I’m really good at
Teaching math and physics, students have told me. A list of things
I enjoy but may not be good at to pad this: Running, singing,
playing guitar, sports, and have gotten my feet wet with cooking.
Also, I'll cook a lemon pepper salmon that'll knock your socks off.
The first things people usually notice about me
My hair. Long brown hair, that's actually pretty well-kept, but is
about due for its annual six-inch trim.
Aside from that? Once you talk to me, that I'm really friendly,
open, and honest. Laid-back, as I like to say.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
a) Quite fond of the Ender series thus far, Ender's Game is one of
my favourites to date. Robert Sawyer, like Calculating God, the
Terminal Experiment, and the Neanderthal Parallax trilogy. Also
enjoyed some more of the usual suspects like Hitchhiker's Guide and
Lord of the Rings, as well. Also, for any pilots, you'll probably
love Jonathan Livingston Seagull. I'm also trying to slog my way
through The Count of Monte Cristo, but it's been slow going.
b) Ghostbusters will always be up there, the Star Wars anthology
(the prequels, not quite as much), and several Mel Brooks parodies,
like Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men In Tights. Big Fish, Back To
The Future, and The Incredibles are some other favourites, and I've
been known to enjoy some musicals as well, like Phantom of the
Opera, Rent, and most recently (though strictly speaking, not a
musical), Once. Also, it's TV and not movies, but I'm a fan of
House, Scrubs, Mythbusters, and Firefly.
c) I actually have an remarkably eclectic taste in music,
everything from Great Big Sea, to the Goo Goo Dolls, to John Mayer,
to Dragonforce, to the Irish Descendants, Bruce Cockburn, Bruce
Springsteen, Dire Straits, any kind of epic guitar playing, a
cappella, Irish music, and others. This is only a small sampling of
my tastes, I've got a rather eclectic musical interest as I said,
which kinda comes from being a musician myself. Being a singer,
I've also get major enjoyment from musical soundtracks. Moulin
Rouge, Rent, and Phantom of the Opera in particular.
d) I used to be a pretty huge carnivore, but now I'm really getting
a taste for vegetables, especially after learning how to cook a
little bit this past summer. I love steak, chicken, and pizza. I've
also been expanding my palate in recent years with various ethnic
foods. I got to liking Thai and dim sum, and I love Greek and
Indian, even though I've only had either a handful of times (on the
greek side of things, I HIGHLY recommend an appetizer called
saganaki. Delicious.) Also, I love chocolate.
The six things I could never do without
- Music
- Exercise, physical or mental
- Good company
- A cozy irish pub, or similar hangout venue
- Some way to escape the world
- Regular (and usually, frequent) doses of sunlight
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How long it will take me to get to where I want to go in life. At
least I've got the 'where I want to go' part figured out.
Whatever meandering philosophical thoughts pop into my head.
How Ender Wiggin would win the Kobayashi Maru test.
Science. Particularly physics.
How neat stars are. No really, they fascinate me. And to think that
the giant nuclear furnace our planet is orbiting is actually a
pretty dinky little humdrum star in comparison to some other stars
in the galaxy.
On a typical Friday night I am
Varies from week to week. Usually I'm not out past midnight, since
I work Saturday mornings, but when I'm out, I'm usually at a pub or
a coffee shop with a friend or friends, and we're talking each
other's ears off. If I'm not working, I'm either out later, or
kicking back and relaxing.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
For some reason that I've yet to pinpoint, I find glasses
incredibly sexy.
Also, I've had my hair braided.
You should message me if
You're into baseball, hockey, gaming, music, guitars, physics,
trivia, or, really, if you just feel like it. Also, if you like to
learn something or teach something, or if you're the kind of person
that loves to just hang around in a pub, have a couple pints, and
shoot the breeze.
Ultimately, I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for at this
point, what with me trying to get my life started. Maybe something
serious, maybe something a bit more casual, or just taking things
on the fly and seeing where it goes. I don't figure there's a rush,
right?
