I am intelligent, patient, and ambitious.

My Self-Summary

I currently teach math at a military high school. My college degree was actually a double in history and political science, but I decided last year I wanted to try being a teacher, and math teachers are in much higher demand than social studies (especially at the high school level), so here I am. That said, I love a rediculous range of subjects, including history, politics, philosophy, science, technology, space exploration, and pretty much everything else with the possible exception of sports. Granted, it's not terribly masculine to dislike sports, but somehow I've never been able to watch a full game of anything without feeling I've wasted an afternoon I will never get back. I'm also prone to wild tangents in my thought process.

Oh, and I almost never drink, have never been drunk in my life, and genuinely believe that someone who does get drunk more than, say, monthly, does in fact have a problem. I'm also much more inclined towards staying in or going hiking, kayaking, camping, driving, etc. as opposed to bars, clubs or concerts. Basically I prefer quiet and space to blaring music and crowds.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm still deciding whether teaching is going to be my life, or just a step towards something else. For quite some time now I've wanted to join the Marines and even applied to Officers' Candidate School, but was turned down because I was 25 lbs above their standard. So far I've lost 15, but even if I get down to the weight standard (190) I still have a lot of work to do as far as running. If I don't end up going into the Marines, then I would like to go to grad school soon, but what I study will be determined, again, by whether I decide I want to teach and then whether I want to continue at high school or try to become a professor.

I’m really good at

I'm a very quick learner, and love to pick up new skills. I also try to stay moderately adept at everything I can. Hence how I ended up with a math teaching job never mind that I haven't taken math since high school.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'm a bit reserved and tend to hang back in most situations. I prefer to watch and let people come to me. I'm also very calm and patient, and love to talk - and hear - about everything. I do get very passionate about philosophy and politics, but am very careful to never allow a discussion to become personal.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Well, my favorite novels are Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead (both by Ayn Rand), but those are more philosophy than entertainment. I love science fiction and fantasy, think Orson Scott Card is one of the greatest scifi authors out there, followed closely by Terri Pratchett's satire.

I don't listen to music as much as I used to, and don't keep up with new releases. I do tend to like soundtracks from fantasy movies (Narnia, Serenity, etc.).

For food, there are dishes I like from around the world, but mostly I love spicy food and meat dishes, and dislike seafood and mushrooms.

The six things I could never do without

I don't really need much. This would be a tough list to put together (without resorting to sarcasm).

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Whatever holds my interest at the time. Recently about where I want to go from here. There's a large part of me that wants to be a true Rennaissance man and change to a new field of work every four or five years. I have a natural inclination for geometry and physics, so I think architecture or engineering would be a fun next stop.

Then again, it would be nice to eventually make more than an entry level wage, so maybe I won't do that.

On a typical Friday night I am

Watching TV or reading. Trying to find someone who is sober and who isn't at a bar or club.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I've been told that I'm incredibly arrogant. I am quite happy with who I am and what I'm capable of, but then again, if I don't know something or need help I have no problem asking, so I'm not really sure arrogant is the correct word.

You should message me if

You're self-confident, don't fight over things that can more easily be talked over, have a reasonable understanding of various subjects, and are looking for someone with a more quiet and intense disposition.

Or if you just want to chat. I'm still fairly new to the area and wouldn't mind making some "just friends".
