I am sorry, thankyou, and sorrythankyou.

My Self-Summary

I write and it's about the only thing I know how to do. I'm usually embarrassed for people who walk into a room and announce that they're artists, but I also tend to get along best with other people who work in the arts, so I might as well start there. Journalism when I'm trying to make money, poetry published in Grain, Fiddlehead, Antigonish Review etc. I have a manuscript that has been dying a slow death in the Canadian literary press circuit. It was written at a time when I really thought that the best way to describe human emotions was through the mouths of very dead and barely comprehensible Greek philosophers. That was before I discovered rock music and ran away to New York to become a music writer. I am a snob and desperately afraid of having this discovered and try to compensate by liking as many horror movies and emo bands as possible. My friends think it's funny when I say "fuck".

What I’m doing with my life

Almost nothing. I was a teaching assistant at Dalhousie for awhile, did an MA in philosophy in Halifax before realizing that I hated philosophy and could not understand a word of the thesis I'd written. Did some journalism in Halifax and New York. Am currently recovering from a longish illness and taking things depressingly slow.

I’m really good at

disappearing

The first things people usually notice about me

"seems nice"

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

It changes all the time, but here's my top 5's for tonight. Books: Ariel, by Sylvia Plath, The Golden Notebook, by Doris Lessing, Vita Nova, by Louise Gluck, The Collected Poems of Zbigniew Herbert, Glass, Irony and God by Anne Carson Bands: Hayden, Bright Eyes, Cat Power, Mountain Goats, The Replacements Movies: Donnie Darko, Angels in America, Wristcutters: a Love Story, The Big Lebowski, Harold and Maude

I spend a lot of time thinking about

embarrassing, anti-social, and otherwise irrational things which I did several years ago but which continue to return with great vividness and clarity even as my short-term memory fades.
