My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Hello people of the internet.
My name is Jake.

I work at a middle school.
It rules. I laugh constantly.
I teach English Language a Arts to kids with learning disabilities.
It's challenging, but I love what I do.

Spent my life in Northeast Philly and the surrounding suburbs. Just moved to West Chester where I know precisely nobody...

I am in my final semester of grad school at Temple (Go Owls) inching my way towards a Masters Degree in secondary education .

I can quote the following movies word for word:
Ghostbusters, The Breakfast Club, Goonies, Fight Club, and Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

I love music, the outdoors, humor, Philadelphia, Philly Sports (but mostly Flyers hockey, and Phillies baseball), comics, horror and comedy movies, and traveling.

I can be a bit of a sarcastic bastard at times.
If you like sarcasm, you might find it funny.
If you don't like sarcasm, you might think I'm kind of a dick.
I'm okay with either. I like being me.

I the past I have worked as the following: radio DJ, music promoter, sound guy, and Philly tour guide.
I still love my music, but now its a hobby.
I still love touring people around my favorite city, but now, I just do it for out of town friends and family.
Sometimes it's better to keep hobbies as hobbies.

Things that I enjoy include: craft beer, good whiskey, trips to the beach or mountains, exploring new places, record and book stores, music festivals, comedy shows, hiking trails, art galleries, old video games (i.e. Atari, Genesis, Nintendo games), and museums.

I'm a bit of a leftist, politically.
I've been called a "socialist," by family members.
I don't really enjoy political talk though.
So if you agree with me, fantastic.
If not, that's cool too, you do your thing, I'll do mine, and we can keep sharing this world and making the best of it.
However, if you are the religious type or extremely conservative in your views, we can be friends, but being anything closer than that would probably be insanely difficult.

Physically, I'm in the "working on it" phase.
A while back I had to have a surgery because of an accident. I couldn't do much physically active for a bit, I packed on a bit of weight.
That sucks, but now I'm back I'm healthy again, and its starting to come off, but I still have some work to do to feel and look like I want to again.

I am over 35 years old and the following things still bring a smile to my face:
- longboard skateboarding
-riding a bike
-traveling by train
- Comic and Horror conventions

I'm pretty sure my outlook on life, the world, and encounters with other people all stem from an amazing quote I heard in the movie BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE as a kid,
"Be excellent to each other, and party on dudes."
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Teaching middle school.
Trying to complete grad school.
Spending time with friends.
Laughing as much as possible.
Playing Cards Against Humanity with anyone who is willing...
Traveling when I have the time and money.
Constantly finding new ways to be a better me.
Getting back in to playing my bass and guitar. (I've been out of practice a few years)
Learning to play an instrument I picked up traveling a few summers back called a churango, which is kind of like a ten stringed South American ukulele.
Counting down the days till summer, and planning travel adventures, baseball games, beach and mountain journeys, and camping trips.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
People tell me I'm a good listener, and that I can somehow stay calm in almost any situation..

Okay something I'm really good at.... Tetris, yes that old puzzle game for the original Nintendo. That was my favorite. I rule at that.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I can talk about anything, but I won't generally start the conversation.

I'm really calm most of the time..
I probably look like I'm thinking really hard, but the chances are I'm just singing whatever song is stuck in my head.

Physically, I'm not sure. you tell me....

I once had a stranger on a Septa bus approach me and tell me I have very unique eyes.
That was kind of fun, but it also creeped me out a little.

I like horror, comedies, comic book films, dramas, action movies, thrillers, cult, foreign, indie, documentary, geeky music films... a little of everything.

Here's my favorite movies
The Goonies, Fight Club, Run Lola Run, O Brother Where Art Thou?, The People Under The Stairs, The Lost Boys,
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, Stand By Me, Big Fish, Do The Right Thing, Empire Records, Basketball Diaries, A Knight's Tale,

I'll give pretty much anything a try.
Not much of an electronic music fan though.

Some Current Favorites:
Corey Brannon, Dr. Dog, Fucked Up, Wichita, Faith No More, Gallows, Kurt Vile, The War On Drugs, Royal Blood, Black Mountain. Mischief Brew, OFF!, Pissed Jeans, Queens of The Stone Age,, Royal Blood, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, The Menzingers

I also just love checking out some little act of any musical genre live at a small venue/dive bar.

I don't have cable, so its hard to stay current. Though recently I've come to realize 90% of the best shows are on Netflix or HBO NOW so my having cable doesn't matter.

Current Favorites:
The League, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Walking Dead, Lillyhammer, Shameless, Arrested Development, Game of Thrones, Orange Is The New Black, Narcos, The Daily Show, Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, Bobs Burgers, South Park, The Daily Show, Aqua Teen Hunger Force (number 1 in the hood G....)

Food: I'll try anything, though I'm not big on things that are very spicy. I like seafood. Vegetarian food is usually good, but so are BBQ ribs. Japanese is probably my favorite.
But nothing with mushrooms, or cooked carrots because that's just gross.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
1. Friends & family
2. music, art, books.
3. Pilot G2 pens
4. Apple Technology
5. Wake GPS app
6. Philadelphia
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
-The future.
- What I want to do next.
- my career.
- Did people take pictures of themselves in bathroom mirrors before social networking sites existed?
-My students.
- What the hell makes people want to listen to Nickelback?
- Why is Philly's subway system so lame compared to other cities?
- Where the hell did I put my cell phone?
- How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Sometimes out at a bar on Girard Ave with some friends, eating a burger, drinking a beer, watching a band, and hanging out.

Sometimes rocking out at a show at a place like The TLA, KungFuNecktie, The Trocadero, or Union Transfer.

Sometimes sitting on a couch at a friends house watching a Flyers Phillies 76ers, Temple Owls, or other sports game.

And sometimes at home relaxing, cooking dinner, and watching a good movie..

Anything goes really, it depends what mood I'm in.

Worst case scenario, I'm sitting at the bar of a Big Heads out in the burbs, but hey at least it gets me out of the house.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I once went to a palm reader and was told I have no lifeline.
When I told this to my Dad he told me it's because I stopped breathing as an infant and wasn't supposed to live.

You know how they say you forget how to ride a bike?
Well I didn't ride one from the time I was 6 and got my first skateboard till my junior year in college... and I did.
Being the doofus in a helmet having friends train you to ride a bike on a college campus, has made for some stories over the years that my friends never seem to forget...
