I am intellectual, eclectic, and ebullient.

My Self-Summary

I reluctantly graduated this May, with a degree in linguistics. (Ask me about it! I'll talk your ear off!)

I'm part of a pirate a capella group (an a capirate group...?) We sing sea shanties and traditional Irish songs and dress up like pirates. Oh yes, and drink rum.

I juggle and play softball reasonably well, and rock-climb not nearly well enough. I'm generally up for buildering or a pick-up game of something or just generally running around being an energetic lunatic.

I love contra dancing but have no sense of rhythm.

I can sing all the way through pretty much every song written between 1950 and 1980. I grew up on oldies. Yeah, I'm that cool.

I'm a wannabe programmer. By that I mean I have 3 semesters' worth of intro computer science classes. But everyone I've dated has been a computer scientist. That's got to count for something, right?

I tried to decorate my room in steampunk fashion, but it ended up just being sort of eclectic pop-Victorian. With robin's egg blue walls. I can deal with that.

I think songs in minor tonalities sound almost universally better than songs in major. Though the natural minor scale sounds like balls. (I think I'm having too much fun highlighting things here.)

I find myself consistently surrounded by musicians and mathematicians, though I am neither.

I don't think I could live somewhere not on the water, or somewhere flat. I love to sail or clamor around in forests.

Though my mind is most dear to me, I allow it to linger in the gutter rather a lot. I curse like a sailor and make sexual jokes like a 13-year-old boy.

My vocal range is dropping ridiculously. I've always sung Sacred Harp as a tenor, but now I'm doing it in the same octave as the boys much of the time.

When I was younger I got yelled at for constantly having my nose stuck in a book in inappropriate locations, such as class, or walking in parking lots.

I think youthful androgyny is fucking sexy. I'm way past the stage when people used to mistake me for a boy, but I kinda miss being a tomboy.

My favorite Pandora stations are seeded with Crooked Still and Flogging Molly.

I’m really good at

being a pirate! (the historically inaccurate, shantying, wenching/whaling/whiskeying sort)
being a prescriptive grammarian in my editing
yelling at anyone who's a prescriptive grammarian otherwise
quoting (Dave Barry? Gilbert + Sullivan? Tom Stoppard? Disney movies?)
comforting people
flirting
getting lost
being late
rescuing squeamish people from bugs

The first things people usually notice about me

"You don't look like a nerd. You look like a pretty girl."
~the guy at the library I randomly talked with about Asimov.

(Note: if you try to correct me to "the guy WITH WHOM I randomly talked," I will punch you. See note above, on prescriptive grammar. That is the sort of nonsense up with which I will not put.)

Also, I just cut my hair short. My friend told me I look like "someone from Grease." "Rizzo?" I asked doubtfully. "No," he says thoughtfully, "Kenickie."

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Oh boy.

Authors/Books (first and foremost): Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Philip Pullman (noticing a trend yet?), Michael Cunningham, some Vonnegut. Catch-22, Harry Potter, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Phantom Tollbooth, Jacob Have I Loved.

Movies: Pan's Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Galaxy Quest, Kinsey

Music: Oldies! Sea Shanties! Irish music! Folk! Klezmer! Crooked Still, Stolen Shack, Decemberists, They Might Be Giants, Shotei Ha'Nevuah, Manu Chao

TV Shows: Star Trek (TOS, TNG), The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The Prisoner, Fawlty Towers

Webcomics: xkcd, Dinosaur Comics, A Softer World (I try not to accumulate too many or I'll never get anything done)

You should message me if

If you're intellectually excitable, nerdy, folk-y, or any of a host of other adjectives, please write me! Looking for friends in the Boston area.

DON'T message me if you're looking for someone to date or bang. Or rather, if you're looking to do those things with me. k? k.
