It's been a little while since I've had the luxury of reading time (that said, I still tend to watch a lot of films and go to a lot of concerts, so I guess that's no excuse), but among my favorite books are ones by Jorge Luis Borges, Elias Canetti, Iceberg Slim, Hanif Kureishi, Vladimir Nabakov, Erich Fromm, and lately I've been picking up a lot of art books on painters like Paul Klee, Jean Michel Basquiat, Kazemir Malevich, Pieter Brueghel, Gerhard Richter, and for some reason I find myself drawn to German Expressionists like Max Ernst, Otto Dix, Egon Schiele, and George Grosz. There's probably something wrong with me.
With music it ranges from the classical music I grew up with, to the Beatles albums I obsessed over as a child to the many branches and innumerable genres I've fallen for ever since.
Folks like specifics... here are a few key albums obsessed over when released:1978-The Cars, 1979-Gary Numan 'The Pleasure Principle', 1980-Linton Kwesi Johnson 'Bass Culture', 1981-U2 'October', 1983-The The 'Soul Mining', 1984-Tom Waits 'Swordfishtrombones', 1985-The Fall 'This Nation's Saving Grace', 1987-Wire 'The Ideal Copy', 1988-Pixies 'Surfer Rosa', 1988-Talk Talk 'Spirit of Eden', 1989-De La Soul '3 Feet High & Rising', 1997-Radiohead 'Ok Computer', 1999-The Cinematic Orchestra 'Motion'. Spend time with me and I'll tell you more than you may want to know.
With film it started with Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey' when I was 10 and now leaps from experimental French psychedelia, Korean revenge dramas, Jewish comedies, Japanese yakuza films, German road movies. There's no end to it.
Again, folks like specifics....
I am completely in awe of the films of Stanley Kubrick, Hal Ashby, John Cassavetes, Sam Peckinpah, David Cronenberg, Roman Polanski, Sergio Leone, Chan-Wook Park, Claire Denis, Robert Altman, Federico Fellini, Lukas Moodysson, Nicholas Roeg, and Andrei Tarkovsky.....
I love much of the work of Alex Cox, Atom Egoyan, Milos Forman, Terry Gilliam, Peter Greenaway, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Jim Jarmusch, Mikhail Kolotozov, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Ken Russell, Martin Scorcese, Paul Schrader, Oliver Stone, Orson Welles, David Lynch, John Boorman, Sydney Lumet, Sydney Pollack, Brian De Palma, Abel Ferrara, Philip Kaufman, Gillo Pontecorvo, and Sergei Parajanov.....
Very excited to see what's coming next from Darren Aronofsky, Mary Harron, Gaspar Noe, Takashi Miike, Alexander Payne, Lars Von Trier, Michael Winterbottom, Kim Ki-Duk, Jonathan Glazer, Andrew Dominik, Richard Kelley, Julian Schnabel, Richard Linklater, Kim Ji-woon, Thomas Vinterberg, and would love to work with them.....
I'm sure I'm missing some fundamental film makers, but that's it for now.
Although I work largely in television, I only tend to watch it on DVD. Commercials are harassment and hopefully will soon be outdated and unnecessary. My faves: The Wire, Breaking Bad, Dave Chappelle's Show, Six Feet Under, Mad Men, The Sopranos, Deadwood, South Park, among others.
Conversations (the interesting ones with interesting people)
Animals (pets or surprises in the wild)
Music (ear checks on the regular)
Movies (I could live film fest to fest)
Adventurous dining (always looking for something new and surprising)
