Books
1984 by George
Orwell. This book has deeply influenced my life.
I felt strongly about Lisbeth Salander in
The girl with the
dragon tattoo, a cyberpunk, outcast, hacker with a deranged
sense of justice, too smart for the people around her, too crazy to
be normal, free of prejudices and uncompromisingly cool.
I like
scientific literature and
reason. I eagerly devour books by
Leonard Susskind,
Sam Harris,
Piergiorgio
Odifreddi,
Marcus du Sautoy,
Brian Greene,
Bertrand
Russell,
Ray Kurzweil, and many other
great minds.
Music
Radiohead,
Mogwai,
Godspeed
You! Black Emperor,
Nine Inch Nails,
Tool,
65daysofstatic,
Muse.
Films
Where do I begin?
Almost anything created by
Shinya Tsukamoto is a freaking
masterpiece and should be a mandatory study on all art and cinema
schools of the world. Too drastic? Go ahead and watch them. You'll
understand.
Darren
Aronofsky is possibly my favourite American Director. It's
strange how an artist at this level can only ameliorate as time
goes on.
Pi was a
psychotic
cyberpunk mathematical adventure,
Requiem
for a Dream made me cry my guts out,
The fountain was pure poetry in
action,
The
wrestler did something I didn't think was possible. It made me
care for a wrestler (???). And
Black Swan, oh dear, Black Swan.
Wow.
Possession by
Andrzej
Zulawski was the most disturbing and emotionally shocking film
I have ever seen. Sometimes I freeze and and have the chills just
by reminiscing some of the scenes, let alone watch it again. It
almost gives me convulsions. The true essence of artistic freedom,
filmography at its peak.
Hayao
Miyazaki. The humanity, the sense of affection and of belonging
that only he can provide. His films are like a distant dream, yet
when I watch them I am engulfed and immersed in this fantastic
world, as if I was already there, but I just forgot.
Finally,
The
Matrix has influenced my life so much that I can't even begin
to describe it. It was the beginning of a journey, which I am still
embarking.
Graphic novels
The graphic novel
Berserk by
Kentaro Miura is simply the most
amazing, awe-inspiring story that I ever read. It would be safe to
say that almost anything I learned in life can be, at some level,
brought back to this story and the teachings in it. It is in
situations like these that words fail me.
Watchmen. Not the
film, the twelve-issue graphic novel by
Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Yes, I
read it
before the film came out. No, I'm not comparing
the two. In fact, I'm exactly making the distinction: one is art,
the other is not. Wanna guess which one?
Web comics I enjoy
xkcd - a webcomic of
romance, sarcasm, math, and language. Basically a geek bible. My
universe.
Dresden
Codak - a celebration of science, death and human folly.
Obligatory read if you read any of Kurzweil's works, and have a
general knowledge of physics and accelerating change.
The Oatmeal -
stinking, rancid awesomeness.
Dilbert - life in
a cubicle.
PHD Comics -
the life a of typical researcher. I can confirm, it's all true!
