My self-summary
My name is Shy (short for Shyaporn - it's Thai). I'm an actor, writer, director and general nerd living in Astoria, Queens. I'm fond of both geeky (Nerd Nite, Super Secret Science Club, themed costume socials, board game parties, etc...) and physical activities (kung fu, Bikram and traditional yoga, rollerblading, rock climbing, kayaking, soccer, hiking, camping, etc...). I like walking around the city as if it's one big museum, popping in and out of shops as though they were art galleries. I enjoy being a tourist in my own city. But, like a cool tourist...

I've developed a bit of an interest in vegetable gardening these past few years, as I finally have an apartment in NYC with a backyard. First year was great, but now I'm trying to find the right balance to reinvigorate my soil. I've also recently started taking ballroom dancing classes and have a big ol' crush on them now. Mostly salsa, but also tango, meringue, waltz and the other smooth and rhythm dances. All just awesome :)

I am partial to board games of the Settlers/Carcassonne/ Citadels/Jungle Speed/Scrabble, etc.. variety, video games (I have recently made a very bad life decision and purchased Starcraft 2...), blogging, making comedy sketches on YouTube, movies both good and bad, comic books and discovering and cooking foods of all varieties (from Thai to Turducken). I enjoy sexuality non-ironically. Vaudeville, burlesque and open mics. And of course, there's roller derby; Gotham Girls rock!

If I get a new song stuck in my head, I will walk/run/dance around listening to it over and over again until I learn the lyrics, then move on to another song. On occasion I've had to seek out karaoke therapy.

What I’m doing with my life
I am a D-List YouTuber. If you're curious about how I'm whoring myself via online video, here: http://www.youtube.com/shyaporn

Packing up, cleaning out and renovating a 1-bedroom apartment. Very, very slowly.

Other than that, trying to get back into fighting shape (not for actual fighting), writing a book about, and sporadically presenting lectures on, Godzilla biology.

Oh, and I've recently discovered Daily Booth as a way of procrastinating from doing any of the above.

Other than my various online distractions, steeling myself for the onset of yet another NYC winter.

I’m really good at
Being occasionally amusing and surprising. To certain people. For short periods of time.

I also make a pretty darned good Borscht. I'll try anything in the kitchen.

Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Book: Illusions by Richard Bach, Shane by Jack Schaeffer, Have Spacesuit Will Travel, Overclocked by Cory Doctorow, The Three Musketeers, Count of Monte Cristo, Lord of the Rings, Against All Enemies, Black Like Me, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Old Man and the Sea, pre-waterfall Sherlock Holmes stories and more.

Movies: Too many to name, but here's a shot: Lawrence of Arabia, Empire Strikes Back, It's a Wonderful Life, Enter the Dragon, Kung Fu Hustle, Master and Commander, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Amelie, Day for Night, Shall We Dance, Notting Hill, To Have and Have Not, Night at the Opera (pretty much anything with the Marx Brothers), Sweet Smell of Success, Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, Godzilla (1957), Raiders of the Lost Ark, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, etc...

Television: (Alas, a good number of my favorite television shows have been cancelled, but there are a few that still linger on - here are a few of the relatively recent ones) BBC's Sherlock, Doctor Who, The Wire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel (season 5), Lost, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, The Sopranos, Now and Again - a show that was so far ahead of it's time it was naturally cancelled after a single season, Firefly - ditto, Justice League Unlimited, Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, the first two seasons of Battlestar Galactica, after which it just died horribly, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office, 30 Rock, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Castle, Justified, Walking Dead, True Blood and various cooking shows. I just started watching Mad Men; it's fantastic and makes me want to wear suits all the time. Also, I MAY be watching Glee, but you won't get me to admit this outside of a karaoke bar (which simply means you should just take me to a karaoke bar.)

Music: I was once told I like "bouncy, quirky music" - Cake, Nerf Herder and Queen. David Bowie and Elvis Costello. The Beatles. Feist. Mika. Sinatra, Martin, Fred Astaire, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder. As of late, I find Arcade Fire amusing - a band that so desperately wants to be emo but their music is far too cheery and upbeat. And so on. I'm pretty behind on pop music.

Food: ALL OF IT. (Except beef tripe and chicken feet. Blech.) I love trying new recipes and interesting eateries, shopping at unique markets and munching at old favorites. I have a taste for both fine cuisine and junky comfort food.

I spend a lot of time thinking about
Physical activities and creating stuff. And how I'd like to do more of both.

Escaping up to Harriman State Park again for a few days of hiking and camping as well. Must order my new backpack.

And there's that whole sex thing. Oh you pesky Y-chromosome...

The most private thing I’m willing to admit
It takes a good deal of effort to resist constantly putting on the Captain Marvel outfit I made for my Superhero/villain birthday party and running around my apartment shouting, "Shazam!"

Actually, that's not private at all.

Several years ago, I had my first, long-term polyamorous relationship, (which has since ended, for reasons mostly unrelated to polyamory). I'd had both traditional monogamous and varying degrees of open relationships before and have found there's actually not much difference - it all comes down to mutual respect and consideration, communication and, of course, chemistry and fun. That said, I find at this point, I'm partial to the concept and built-in honesty and communication of poly relationships, and I'm always happy to talk about this more in depth.

I’m looking for
  • Girls who like guys
  • Ages 18–43
  • Near me
  • Who are single
  • For long-term dating, short-term dating, activity partners, casual sex
You should message me if
... any or all of the following apply:

You have a love of things both mundane and perverse.

You had two or more costumes planned for Halloween, or one really fantastic one.

You're open to the non-traditional.

You think sitting in a room together sipping tea while working on our respective creative and/or work projects would be a lovely way to spend time.

You're a fellow work-in-progress.

You want to enable my karaoke habit.

Also, if you live in Astoria and you're looking for a workout partner, I definitely need more people to run/go to yoga/do calisthenics in the park with! And I'd love a fellow beginner-intermediate dance partner in the area to practice with on the odd weeknight - mostly salsa, but also tango, meringue, waltz and the other smooth and rhythm dances. All just awesome :)
