* BOOKS & WRITERS: Catcher in the Rye and Salinger in general,
Allan Poe, Survivor and Choke by Palahniuk, Lolita, The Stranger,
The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and the Sea, the lighthearted
David Sedaris, the great Natsume Soseki, the almost Nobel-worthy
Murakami Haruki, Greek Mythology, Chinese literature from Ming to
Ching Dynasty.... and the eternal Eileen Chang & DFW.
* MOVIES: Fight Club (!actually better than the book!),
Trainspotting, All About My Mother, Talk to Her, The Motorcycle
Diaries (the true romantics...), Y Tu Mamá También, Chasing Amy
(along with Clerks and Mallrats), Fargo, Burn After Reading, The
Big Lebowski, Eat Drink Man Woman, Brokeback Mountain (true love
never dies), Life of Pi, Lost in Translation, The Life Aquatic with
Steve Zissou, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise
Kingdom, Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters, Blue Jasmine (and I
used to love all Woody's stuff until he started to behave like a
!WAIT!- how can I forget Thelma & Louise? The answer to my
teenage angst, showing me that we girls were actually stronger than
we knew about ourselves. But no, I do not wish to drive off the
cliff, ever, ever in my life.
* TV: !Breaking Bad! has got to be the best show after The Wire.
Nurse Jackie was so much fun the first three seasons until she got
sober (then the show took a nose dive turned into a cheesy Lifetime
women's drama...). Boardwalk Empire and Homeland are my current
loves, still trying not to get sucked into The Walking Dead &
Game of Thrones.
** Some of my not-so-serious favorites on TV (when I want to rest
my brain and be hypnotized): American Pickers, Pawn Stars, Family
Guy, American Dad, South Park, Chopped, The Soup (oh I know the
Eeeew! Network, home of the grotesque Kardasians) and My Cat from
Hell (Hellya! Attack! Kitties! Attack!!).
* MUSIC: Duran Duran were my rock gods when I was 11. Then Robert
Smith stole my heart with his makeup and the melancholy accent. Axl
was a fluke- although "Sweet Child O' Mine" was actually a very,
very endearing song. And then there came Kurt & Nirvana. Still
heartbroken about the whole sad ending of the band. Around the same
time my girl crush Kim Deal and her little band the Breeders made
me aware of the Pixies- still one of my top favorites and forever
will. And the Pumpkins with Billy Corgan!
And then the kids in my art school were all fanatic about Radiohead
& Daft Punk. . . .
Nowadays I find the Lumineers really, really refreshing; good kids,
I love them. Oh and Green Day (of course), the Avette Brothers, The
New Pornographers, Metric, BRMC, Built to Spill (back in the days),
My Bloody Valentine, Janis Joplin, Dylan & Joan Baez,
Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Chopin, Liszt, Vivaldi, and
most of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods composers, plus
everything wonderfully and horribly indie (oh The Silver Jews and
Mates of State!).
*FOOD: Smart fusion food, Japanese, tastefully-done Chinese, Korean
(especially when it's cold out). And the current food truck
revolution actually makes me a more adventurous eater, gotta love
that. I don't eat four-legged animals but bring in the fresh
fruits, veggies and seafood, please!
(If you are a big meat eater, I don't think I would like you,
sorry. . .)
