I am happily single, but I'd like to make some new friends and date
more often. In the process, I hope to learn more about my likes and
dislikes, and finally meet someone who is right for me. I'm a bit
eccentric, so that could take a while.
What I’m doing with my life
Educating future generations of California's children, and enjoying
it a lot. Reading as much as I can, enjoying a few favorite
interests and hobbies.
I’m really good at
being resourceful and making do with what's at hand. I can also
drive a stick shift and know my way around town. I'm also good at
reading maps and driving long distances. I can cook when there's
someone to cook for. I have a huge vocabulary and I know how to
swim. I'm also really good at keeping quiet about these
talents--most of the time.
The first things people usually notice about me
Most say my smile. Some people like my eyes (blue with hints of
green), but when I smile, my eyes squinch up and it's harder to see
I'm usually a snappy dresser, too, so I get compliments in that
department---though I seem to be casually dressed in my profile
photos. Rest assured, though; I look good in suits and ties, and
you can take me anywhere.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: I like nonfiction about social, political, and psychological
topics, Kurt Vonnegut, and the classics of literature. My summer
goal is to finish reading or watching Shakespeare's comedies. I am
also starting to get back into science fiction after not having
read any since my teens. Kindred by Octavia Butler was really good,
as was The Space Merchants by Frederick Pohl. I'd like to read more
Movies: The older the better. Marx brothers, the Thin Man series.
Almost anything with Boris Karloff or Bela Lugosi.
Shows: Hoarders, Star Trek, Dragnet, Columbo, Mystery Science
Theater 3000, Doctor Who.
Music: Devo, Frank Zappa, Shonen Knife, Bonzo Dog, 70s/early 80s
punk/new wave/power pop, 60s psych and garage rock, trippy bachelor
pad music, rockabilly, surf, opera, classical, and more.
I like discovering new sounds via college radio and record store
Food: Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Indian, burgers, salads. I will
try most foods at least once.
The six things I could never do without
--Good radio stations (KFJC, KDFC)
--a library card
--reading glasses (Getting older does have some benefits, but
improved eyesight isn't one of them.)
--Medium viscosity Superglue
--300 grit sandpaper
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Is B.F. Skinner correct in postulating that our thoughts are merely
another kind of action that is reinforced through reward and
repetition, and if so, what are the moral implications?
Also, where can I find a truly good hamburger?
On a typical Friday night I am
Out seeing a good band if one is playing. I might also be eating,
drinking, and conversing with friends and/or coworkers.
If it's been a very busy week, I might unwind with a movie on
Netflix or read a good book.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I get regular manicures and pedicures; I'm totally worth it.
(One more thing: I have exactly five fingers on each hand. The
profile name is the title of an Outer Limits episode.)
