Jack London makes the point that the coldness of the south pole is the very coldness of space reaching down through the hole in the atmosphere there. Earth's favor thins, and space reaches for us. But that's just a metaphor. You could also say space is returning to its natural state, because, as Ghostface points out, you're still in space when you're on Earth. Gravity is just holding you down. All in all mindblowing.
