I'm in an open relationship with veteran4peace, a man who is quickly becoming one of my favorite people ever. Love is unexpected and spine-tingling.
I live by two golden rules. One: the truth always sets me free, and the more truth I tell myself and others, the freer I am. Two: Texas summers are too goddamn hot to not eat ice cream every day.
I love belly laughs at bad puns. I'll try anything once, except Russian Roulette. I'm happiest when I'm learning. If you have expertise in some area that interests me, I'm likely to pick your brain to the bone. I lived radical honesty a decade before I knew the term. (That's right -- I'm the hipster of radical honesty!) I am an extrovert with no fear of public speaking or meeting new people. What's the worst that can happen? Someone may not like me? Pshhh... I've been disliked before -- it's not so bad. I'm very independent, probably because I'm very happy.
I'm not a romantic. If I wanted flowers and chocolates, I would just buy them and share them with friends. Clothing is completely utilitarian to me; I'm fashion-blind the same way some people are color-blind. If we go out, you might as well go ahead and not dress up. I'm not going to notice if you do, anyway. I'm attracted to brains and character, not fabric.
I take in new information the way addicts take in heroin, which is why I love hanging out with Bret_N. I also like to give information, and my enthusiasm is contagious. The experience of creating light bulb moments for other people is seriously addicting for me, so I just might celebrate by doing a nerdy little happy dance.
I'm looking to meet new people and to learn interesting, new things, but I am not looking for commitment, a soul mate, or a lifetime anything. I wouldn't feel comfortable committing myself to one job for the rest of my life or one house I would live in until I die, so why would I sign up for one person forever and ever amen? I do tend to keep friends and lovers for long times; I just think having a verbal or written contract takes all the joy and spontaneity out of being with someone.
I don't commit to ideologies either. In my relatively short life, I've been a Christian, Taoist, Buddhist, Hindu, spiritual but not religious, agnostic, and atheist. I've been conservative and liberal, Republican, Democrat, and Socialist. I'm not judgmental. What ever you think, whatever you do, I've probably thought or done at some point in my life. I can deeply empathize with almost everyone I meet, so even if we disagree, I won't be a jackass to you.
A couple of themes run through the many facets of Liz: I'm curious, I'm not afraid, and life is a grand experiment. I score high on all of the Big Five personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. All my scores are higher than the average population, but my extraversion and conscientiousness scores are most extreme. I like being a social "connector", so that if someone needs anything from a good mechanic to information about neuroscience, I've got a friend to recommend.
Someone once tried to insult me by calling me a "freethinker", and, completely separately, another person tried to chide me by asking me why I can't just be satisfied to believe whatever society tells me is good. I consider these incidents two of the greatest compliments I've ever been given.
I'm an atheist feminist who tells my students exactly how all the major world religions can be interpreted as feminist and pro-woman. (As in, "This is why Islam has been misrepresented as hating women.") I'm an anti-capitalist, anti-media liberal who presents defenses of Disney's gender portrayals. I'm an anti-marriage non-traditional, polyamorous person who teaches about marriage, love, and cohabitation. I doubt my students could guess my own stances on issues, which is exactly the job of academics, in my opinion.
The only area in which I don't "teach the controversy" is evolution. There's no way to understand gender without understanding both sexual and natural selection. Students leave my class understanding testosterone (it's more complicated than you think!), red/green color recognition, gendered brain development, and the evolution of ape balls.
Also, I'm a fucking formidable debater. I don't create debates, but if the people around me want to debate, I'll have fun with it and concede points since that's integral to being a great debater. I'm never rude or mean, and if a debate becomes ugly I just leave it immediately or change the subject, even if I'm "winning". Nobody wins if debate isn't fun. Besides, a debater who insulted other people wouldn't be formidable; she'd be committing an ad hominem fallacy. ;)
This song makes me want to marry Les Claypool, and also seems like a reasonable litmus test for compatibility with me:
I'm a non-picky eater. I've gotten the best meals of my life since I stopped trying to choose from a menu myself. I very often ask waiters and waitresses to surprise me with whatever they think is good. Best meals EVER.
As an information and learning junkie, a grad student, and a professor, I mostly read social science articles. I read about religion, morality, spirituality, inequality, gender, religion, globalization, ethnicity, religion, political structures, economics, evolution, culture, status structures, homosapien history, free will, religion....
Sometimes I have the misfortune of reading about math or programming, since I cannot understand all the freaking awesome things I want to understand without math and programming. Someday, I hope to hire a poorly-paid, overworked research assistant to do all the programming for me.
I really don't like alcohol at all. I don't have anything against it ideologically, but it tastes like moldy gym socks. Seriously. I've had to scrub my tongue after a taste of alcohol on more than one occasion.
You won't like me if you're the jealous type. I'm in a polyamorous relationship with Veteran4Peace and my ex-boyfriend, WombWithAView is one of my best friends. I give full-body tackling hugs to many of my male friends, like rogued1, and I've been not-so-secretly lusting after profileretread for the better part of 16 years. Much of my friendship circle is made up of ex-boyfriends and ex-lovers, and no, it's not at all awkward. My boundaries between friendship and dating have always been quite fluid. One of the highlights of my dating life was the time I was explaining to a much younger female friend that sex gets better with age and experience, and two of my ex-lovers, who were listening to this conversation quietly, shared a high five. That's right -- two people I care about high-fived each other for making me happy. Holy balls, my life is fucking AMAZING! I surround myself with people who give and receive love freely, and I am well-loved. (Feel free to read that sentence straight-forwardly or as double entendre, because they're both true.)
Also, feel free to message me if you think we'd be friends, even if you don't want to date me. I'm the only person I know who may have gained more friends from OkC than I have lovers. (At least I think so -- I'd have to do the math.)
This doesn't really fit in the "You should message me if" category, but it made me laugh so I'm putting it here anyway:
