My self-summary

Oh, hai.

Yes! I am that person who is looking for friends on OKCupid! Even Activity Partners! (or is that a euphemism for something awk?) SO MANY ACTIVITIES! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moR_v1lmJL4

I like the internet A LOT and lulz and reddit and all that. I like (good) dogs and will smile at them way before I smile at you while walking down the street. I am obsessed with museums, informal education and the history of (early-to-mid 20th Century) science and technology, especially the Space Race, because srsly wtf was that. I love Boston/Cambridge/Somerville and the insane mishmash of creative and talented people that live around here. I don't drive because cars freak me out in an OK Computer-album-art sort of way. I go through phases where I get fixated on certain regions of the world and I quell my wanderlust with crazy 4:00am 'travels' on Google Streetview and Flickr. If you want to talk about road signage in different parts of the world, HIT ME UP.

I am a humanist who struggles with cynicism, but I'm trying to do better with that. I'm not sure if I prefer the primary connotation to that word to be about the philosophy or the typeface style. Bonus points if you have a favorite humanist typeface that isn't Optima. I value passion, perseverance and proactivity, and I honestly didn't mean for that to be alliterative OR alphabetical. I don't believe in destiny and I believe we have a lot more agency in our lives than is commonly assumed. That doesn't mean I'm a libertarian. I like to make and I like to learn about how stuff is made. I like teaching and learning, and I think there's a big overlap between the two. I like working with the public, though only if I can marinate in Purell afterwards. I'm hypocritical about Purell. Don't use it. I'm into material culture but not really materialism. I have never been bored in my life, and I am often overwhelmed by the amount of things to learn or do.

So my "friend personal" goes like this: are you interesting? Are you interested in stuff? What? Have you lived or traveled to other places and want to tell someone all about it? Do you make cool things? Do you have that coveted 'eclectic' musical taste and wish that someone would listen to your perfected playlists? Are you an artist?? I yearn for more creative people in my life, srsly.

You know when you're drunk and you're blabbing at the person next to you about how you should totally hang out? Like omg, we should totalllllly hang out! This profile is an extension of that sentiment.

We should totally hang out.

What I’m doing with my life

Trying to best prepare myself for the field of science exhibit development. I go to grad school for museum education and I work as a print and web media designer by day. I also used to teach kidlets, but not anymore. I have a studio at Artisan's Asylum, which is apparently the largest maker space on the "eastern seaboard".

I originally went to school for physics, but realized that I like the history of science a whole lot more than the practice. More specifically, I value the public understanding of the history of science and ways to communicate it to wide audiences. I am obsessed with this field, will readily talk your ear off about it, and have no idea why it took me so long to figure out that's what I want to do with my life. I blame Carl Sagan.

I’m really good at
Knowing far more internet memes than I'd like to admit.
Hanging posters on walls.
Figuring out what works and doesn't work in a museum exhibit.
Cooking gluten free things that taste like they are full of gluten.
Data hoarding.
Using brackets on here.
italics and brackets!
The first things people usually notice about me
I have magenta hair more often than not, so usually that. Also, I've been told that I talk a lot about documentaries???
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

BOOKS: misc history and science things, mostly. Lolita is probably my favorite novel. I tend to read New Yorker/Atlantic/Vice/Slate/various internet essays (lolcats) more than I read actual books. For some reason I've read a lot of books about the Himalayas. Also, so many podcasts.

MOVIES: I like historic melodrama. I'm formulaic when it comes to films… if it vaguely resembles some historical time period, has fancy costumes and crazy music, I'll probably love it.
My favorite films are: Apollo 13, Seven Years in Tibet, Fight Club, A Beautiful Mind, V For Vendetta, The Matrix, Primer, Bill Cunningham New York, Elizabeth, Hook, Little Miss Sunshine, Braveheart, Dark Knight, Being John Malkovich, October Sky, Turner and Hooch, The Truman Show, Pi, Legends of the Fall, The Right Stuff, Gattaca, Man on the Moon, Vanilla Sky, One Hour Photo, Hearts in Atlantis, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

SHOWS:

Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!, Look Around You, Real Time with Bill Maher, Penn & Teller Bullshit!, Queer As Folk, The Colbert Report, Family Guy

I will watch any BBC documentary and become obsessed with it, for better or for worse.

MUSIC: R.E.M., Radiohead, Bloc Party, Ladytron, Death Cab for Cutie, Nine Inch Nails, New Young Pony Club, The Decemberists, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, London Elektricity, The Libertines, Underworld, Modest Mouse, Modeselektor, The Stills, Goldfrapp
I listen to electronic (name your trendy genre) things mostly. I go through drum and bass phases a lot. I recently found the streaming radio station that they play inside Chipotle restaurants, so that's been pretty great too.

FOODS: olives, sushi, curry, avocados, cilantro, pickles, dates, lobster, espresso, gluten-free things.

These things sound disgusting when I list them all together.

The six things I could never do without
People really seem to hate this question!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Rockets that went to the moon and the people who got them there and the political and social atmosphere that made it happen.
Assumptions and beliefs about science.
NEWS OF THE WORLD versus News Of The World.
Fonts.
DOGS.
CATS.
