My self-summary
Originally from New Jersey, moved to SF in '89 and been here ever since. Jewish. Gemini. I like bike-riding, hiking, being outside, being surrounded by greenery. Went to NYU for Film.

I'm passionate about the arts. I like going to theater occasionally (I saw August: Osage County, Green Day's American Idiot musical, and Next to Normal (awful) for instance. Yes, it's true, a straight guy who enjoys the theater! Go figure.) On my recent trip back to NYC, I saw Denzel Washington in Fences by August Wilson, and it was great! Love music, graphic design, photography, and of course FILM. Every now and then I DJ on a very amateur level. I have turntables, vinyl, and I love playing music for people.

I long for good conversation. Looking for someone who isn't afraid to talk/listen, someone who has ideas and opinions, and a willingness to express them. Intellectual discourse is hot!

I have a subscription to The New Yorker, and I listen to NPR. You don't have to be deeply involved in either of those, but just wanted to give an idea of where my head is at.
What I’m doing with my life
Trying to get ahead in the world. Working in Film/Commercial Production. Things are going well. After years of paying my dues I feel like I'm finally seeing progress, getting better gigs, better pay, more responsibility.

I like jogging, bike-riding, hiking, etc. I'm happy when I sweat. I guess it's the adrenalin rush, the endorphins, whatever. I'm not a gym rat by any stretch, but it satisfies me both physically and mentally, and if I don't move my body and increase my heart rate I start to miss it after four or five days.

I usually eat healthfully at home, while exploring less-healthful food options away from home.
I’m really good at
Cooking, listening, being a dinner guest, being "conversationally funny" as opposed to, say, doing stand-up.
Hunting down freelance gigs.
Alphabetizing stuff.
Doing the dishes.
Making tea. (Seriously, I brew a mean pot of loose leaf tea.)
Helping out of town production companies find local grips, gaffers, camera assistants, PAs, etc.
The first things people usually notice about me
The funny little hipster goatee thing on my chin (I guess?)
My bluntness, my lack of pretension and/or diplomacy?
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Wow. This could be a ridiculously long list.

Books: I have a subscription to The New Yorker. That's my justification for not reading many books. Getting through the articles and short stories in each issue is enough. Books I have enjoyed in the past include Fortress of Solitude by Lethem, Middlesex by Eugenides, nearly anything by Vonnegut. I've read short stories by Junot Diaz, heard him speak in LA, and I really like his stuff.
Loved Last Exit to Brooklyn. I love how Selby uses language/words. Honestly: I read too many magazines and articles, not enough actual full-length books. It's a flaw, I admit it.

I just read Blink by Malcolm Gladwell on a trip and loved it.

Movies: went to NYU for film school. Movies are important to me. Big fan of Kubrick and Scorcese. I like everything Aronovsky has made so far. **Update: that is no longer true. I did not enjoy Black Swan. I know plenty of people who did, but I'm baffled as to exactly WHY. From Tarantino, I like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and I enjoyed Inglourious Basterds.
Loved Children of Men - great story, great film-making. Loved Heat by Michael Mann. I like plenty of "trash" too: Matrix (only the first one, none of the sequels), Fifth Element, Dawn of the Dead. Saw District 9 - loved it. Enjoy "mature" films, such as Revolutionary Road, The Reader, etc. Basically, anything where the writer and director cared, I'll probably enjoy. Just noticed in someone else's profile they listed In Brueges. That film was GREAT! Love Cassavetes. Love Coppola from 72 - 83 (his golden era.)

Music: wow. This is big. I was raised on Classic Rock (Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd) from my older brother and sister. Emigrated to SF in '89 and got into Hip-Hop (Run-DMC, Digital Underground, Beasties, Pharcyde, Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr.)
Bands from the last 10 - 15 years that I like include Eagles of Death Metal and Queens of the Stone Age, Lily Allen, Major Lazer, MIA.
My list is nearly endless: Tom Waits, The Kinks, Tull, Bowie, Bob Marley, Dire Straits, Massive Attack, Sigur Ros, System of a Down.
Bands I've had quite enough of, thank you: The Dead. Linkin Park. Nickelback.
I really like Reggae/Dancehall, but I fully realize that most people find it repetitive and mindless. Still, there is something about the rhythm and repetition that I really enjoy. I like listening to mixes made by DJs who specialize in Dancehall/Ragamuffin. How's that for musical snobbery? Into Damian Marley, Vybz Kartel, Bounty Killer, Jah Warrior Shelter Hi-Fi, etc.)

Food: Hard to be sure what I'm more passionate about: film, food, or music. If I edited a magazine, it would be about all three of those subjects. Foods that I like? Osha Thai on Geary in SF, Them Ky (Vietnamese dive) in The Tenderloin, Genova Deli in Berkeley/Oakland, Burma Super Star. Foods I wish SF had more of: Greek, Ukranian. What's up with the dearth of Greek food? **Update: I was just in Alameda for a commercial shoot; apparently THEY'VE got all the Greek Restaurants over there. ** Wish we had better Deli and Pizza, but hey, that's why I go back to NYC/NJ at least once a year, to get my fix of good bagels, pizza, and other carb-y delights.
The six things I could never do without
My pillow.
My i-phone.
A pen.
My two cats (adopted in May of 2010)
A shower.
My bike.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
what projects I'd like to produce, like maybe a documentary about the SF Dump/Recycling Center, or a week-long residency for Tom Waits at Marin Civic Center, or how to turn a Jonathan Lethem short story into a short film. Or how to get my favorite Cuban restaurant in Hoboken, NJ to open a branch here in SF. Ideas/endeavors pop in to my head, and I ruminate on them. Sometimes I even follow through!

Lately I've been spending a lot of time thinking about "When did dating become SO HARD?"
On a typical Friday night I am
As many have said before me, there is no "typical" Friday night. Might be heading out to dinner with friends, might be getting ready for a 6am call time Saturday morning on top of Mt. Tam. My IDEAL Friday night would be a nice dinner for 4 - 6 folks with good food and good conversation.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I kissed a girl, and I LIKED it!
I’m looking for
  • Girls who like guys
  • Ages 30–40
  • Near me
  • Who are single
  • For long-term dating
You should message me if
- You have something to say.
- You are hoping to find someone to get serious with, eventually start a family with.
- You can laugh at yourself.
- If you were asked, "Where do you want to go for dinner?" you would have a destination in mind, rather than simply, "I don't know, where do YOU want to go for dinner?"
- You still believe in calling, not just texting or emailing.
- The following sound like things you'd enjoy or at least want to try out: going to hear Jonathem Lethem, Matthew (Mad Men) Wiener, and/or Stephen Sondheimspeak. (They all were part of a series of talks at the JCC last year. I missed Lethem, but saw the other two.) OR, checking out Off The Grid at Fort Mason on a Friday night. OR catching one of those free concerts at Stern Grove (Neko Case? Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings? The English Beat?)
- You can deal with someone who doesn't always say the right thing, but who DOES, at least, always apologize when the wrong thing has been said.
