My Self-Summary

Fàilte!

I am a transplanted New Yorker now living in Seattle. No, that does not mean that I am an ass (though I can be at times - can't we all?) however, I am straight forward, blunt, and frankly, I appreciate those qualities in others. With me you will always know where you stand and I like to have that be true of those with whom I surround myself. Life is far too short for games or to be surrounded by people who are afraid to speak their minds.

I have quite a dark sense of humor and given the proper setting and in the proper context, there is not much that I won't joke about. I have an open mind about MOST things and if I have not yet tried it, chances are it's somewhere on my list. I don't judge others based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion (so long as they don't push their invisible man/woman/Flying Spaghetti Monster in the Sky on me), country or origin and neither should you.

Now, with that out of the way, I am a single father to a 23 month old boy. If you have a problem with that, oh well. I'm not looking for a mother for my son (he already has one - thank you very much) but we are a package deal so if you're not ok with being around a kid on occasion, then you ought not waste your time reading any further.

I am an avid film buff, a pretty damn good cook, a lover of music, wine, beer (not in that bacchanal sort of way, don't worry), politics (in theory more so than in application - theory always seems to be misapplied and thus we find ourselves in the messes we are always in), and many things obscure and left of center. I like to get outside when I can and try to stay active. That said I enjoy lazy days at home as well. I like to read. A lot. I enjoy good debate and hearty conversation. I like to have my ideas challenged and to be made to look at/understand views necessarily different from my own. I am, in a lot of ways, quite unconventional, and I like others who are as well. I am a big fan of tattoos and I plan on getting many more.

Well, I guess that's as good a primer as I have the patience to sit here and write at the moment. If you'd like to know more, you have but to ask.

What I’m doing with my life

Having a hell of a good time and trying to have as many new experiences as possible!!!!!! On any given day I might be found sitting on my patio in the sun reading a good book, shopping for ingredients for an excellent meal that I am preparing for friends in the evening, brewing beer, drinking said beer, listening to music, seeing a show (concert, play, movie, etc), hiking, skiing, Oh, and mainly, being the best damn father I can be to my little boy (to wit, at a year and a half old, he already loves The Clash - heh heh).

I’m really good at

Trying to learn more about the things that I am really good at and improving at those things which I am not.

A short list of things I excel in might read:

Skiing
Cooking
Brewing Beer
Debating
Sharing knowledge about music or film
Drawing
Teaching
Putting my sarcastic wit to good employ
Exploring my surroundings, both local and otherwise

The first things people usually notice about me

The rotten corpse in the trunk of my car. The stench gives it away. Ok, that's not true. No, really, it's not! :-) In earnest I'd probably have to say my eyes and/or my sense of humor.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books (not in any sort of order here): Dune, Good Omens, American Gods, Necronomicon (any Lovecraft really), Lord of the Rings, Don Quixote, Lord of the Flies, Winter's Tale, The Hyperion Cantos, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Candide, Narcissus in Chains, House of Leaves, Manufacturing Consent (and anything else by Chomsky), Choke, Survivor, The Trial, The Castle, Please Kill Me: An Oral History of Punk, Anything by William Gibson, anything by Douglas Coupland, Focault's Pendulum, and many, many more.

Movies: Dead Ringers, Ran, Kagemusha, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Videodrome, Eraserhead, Strangers On A Train, Dial M For Murder, M, Rope, BladeRunner, Secretary, The Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spinal Tap, Princess Bride, Repo: The Genetic Opera, Brazil, Ugetsu, Amadeus, Network, Akira, Pan's Labyrinth, The Fisher King, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Westway to the World, Serenity, Blue Velvet, Kingdom of Heaven, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Reds, Happiness, Dog Day Afternoon, Excalibur, The Day Of The Jackal, SLC Punk, Hackers, Sid and Nancy, The Deer Hunter, The Third Man, Chinatown, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Dark City, The Virgin Spring, The Seventh Seal, City of Lost Children, Akira, etc, etc

TV (A few shows need to be mentioned): BSG (Arguably the BEST FRAKING SCI-FI show ever), Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations, Man Vs. Food (guilty pleasure), Buffy, Firefly. The original Start Trek and TNGN were great too.

Music: Pretty much anything other than country or most hardcore rap. Blues, Jazz, Punk (real punk - not the crappy neo-pop-punk you get today), Metal, Classic Rock, Indie (so long as it's not of the pretentious annoying sort), Classical, Flamenco, Funk, Soul, etc. I do tend to gravitate to the Blues and various forms of Rock though. Anything with feeling and soul though is ok in my book. Here's a random sampling from my collection:

AC/DC, Agnostic Front, Allman Brothers, Alien Sex Fiend, Anthrax, Albert Collins, Albert King, Audioslave, Bad Brains, Band of Horses, Beastie Boys, BB King, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Billy Joel, Black Flag, Black Sabbath, Bob Marley, Buddy Guy, Burning Spear, Carnivore, Cat Stevens, Clutch, Cro-Mags, Celtic Frost, Circle Jerks, The Clash, The Cramps, Charlie Parker, David Bowie, Dead Boys, Dead Kennedys, Descendents, Destruction, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Disposable Heroes of Hiphopsicy, Dio, Dizzie Gillespie, The Doors, Dropkick Murphys, The Dubliners, Eric Clapton, Fields of the Nephilim, Fishbone, Flogging Molly, Frank Zappa, Freddie King, Funkadelic, GBH, Genesis, Germs, The GITS, Gov't Mule, Gorilla Biscuits, Heart, Helmet, Iggy Pop/Iggy and the Stooges, Iron Maiden, Janes Addiction, Janis Joplin, Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Cash, John Coletrane, Kreator, Lamb of God, Lonnie Mack, Little Feat, Lou Reed, The Mars Volta, MC5, Miles Davis, Mindless Self Indulgence, Ministry, Minor Threat, The Misfits, Neil Young, Nuclear Assault, Ozzy Osbourne, Pennywise, The Phenomenauts, The Pixies, Pink Floyd, PJ Harvey, The Pogues, The Police, Q-Tip, Queen, Queensryche, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Rammstein, The Ramones, Reverend Horton Heat, Rollins Band, Sex Pistols, Simon and Garfunkel, Slayer, Shiny Toy Guns, The Slits, Social Distortion, Stiff Little Fingers, Subhumans, Talking Heads, TSOL, Thelonius Monk, Tiger Army, Tom Waits, A Tribe Called Quest, U2, Velvet Underground, Violent Femmes, White Stripes, The Who, X and much more. This is just a small A-Z sampling.

Food: Sushi, Italian, Ethiopian, Spanish, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, etc. There's not much I don't eat and enjoy and there is next to nothing I am not willing to try. Food is an adventure and, as rumor has it, I like adventure!

The six things I could never do without

My Son
Sushi
Music
My friends and family
Travel
An open mind

I spend a lot of time thinking about

My son, politics, cooking food, brewing beer, music, film, travel, you know, all the usual suspects.

On a typical Friday night I am

Out on the town, at home with my son, or cooking dinner for friends.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Our lord and savior wants you to give me all your money before noon tomorrow and, if you do, your place in heaven will be assured.

Ok, ok, would you buy that I have great disdain for organized religion?

Not terribly private but hey, I don't know you!

You should message me if

You have a good sense of humor, do not offend easily, and love good, intelligent conversation and you appreciate the comedic stylings of Eddie Izzard and George Carlin (St. George?). Please do also message me if you feel there are things we can learn from one another. Also, if you meet the above criteria and are interested in going out to explore the Seattle food and music scene, you get major bonus points!

You should NOT message me if:

You are a dyed in the wool conservative, are a major fan of country music (sorry, I've tried going down that road. The sounds make me cringe and the fans and I usually have different values. It's just does not work), are not open to new ideas and experiences, are a racist/homophobe/small minded idiot whose genes do not belong in the pool. Also, if you are looking to foist your religion upon me please move along. I welcome and even encourage theological debate and discussion but I'm not looking to be converted, thank you.
