I enjoy all genres of music, with the exception of rap. I think
that's because rap is spoken, rather than sung. It lacks melody and
harmony. I really enjoy interesting rhythms as well, but I do like
something tuneful to go with them.
I think some of my favorite musical memories, even in a town with
as much live music as Athens has, involve a record player. Years
ago (late 1980's), there was a cave-like little dive called The
Downstairs. It was accessed by an iron spiral staircase that took
you from the sidewalk to a little grotto below the street level.
The low ceiling enhanced the intimate atmosphere of the two tiny
rooms with their cramped stage, and some of the most interesting
characters in a town legendary for its quirky personalities passed
through it on a daily basis -- poets, musicians, political
activists, artists, actors, and some just-plain-crazies. On nights
when no act was performing, there was, for the amusement of the
patrons, a dusty cabinet-style record-player from the '40's or
'50's, and a rag-tag collection of classic old jazz albums. I think
we had as much fun playing and listening to those albums as seeing
live bands. We certainly learned alot about a genre most of us had
little experience with.
I do enjoy books and movies, but, as I'm still caught up in the
above memory, I'll save that for another day.
I like to try new and different types of cuisine and can find
something to enjoy in all of them.
