My self-summary
While I sometimes relax upon the axis of the wheel of life, that would reflect a too-passive approach. Eclectic, energetic, playful, curious, humorous and tender are all adjectives that work for me. With a very happy upbringing by superlative parents and sibs, I am happiest staying engaged in a mix of my social, business, creative and physical worlds, in perfect balance. HA! who has perfect balance, and what is perfect? Well I do feel as close as I have ever been in life. My own business helps get me free when I want to, as it mostly runs itself. Hoping my partner will have some time freedom too, but I know its hard to create that.

I have a daughter in the professional world and two fine young adult sons who are now on their own, and now have moved to Hawii on the Big Island where they are engaged in sustainable agriculture. I go see them (twist my arm) sometimes.

I did not and will not lie about my age, or anything else, and would need you to have the same philosophy. Intellectual and emotional honesty is the only way to live. Being 60 and strong feels wonderful, whats a little gray hair on the chin?
What I’m doing with my life
Working on what I have been calling the "third trimester of life", having grown up (#1), raised great kids who are off on their own (#2) I now am a bit more focused on self, and on making sure my work is making the planet a better place when I take my leave. Staying strong and healthy of major importance as well and I always make time for that. Engaging and chasing my considerable curiosity about the world where ever it leads me, also so important to my well being.

After years in the corporate world of environmental engineering, I gained sufficient knowledge and expertise to start my own company which directs investor money to humanitarian and other projects.

Love the organization Mercy Corps have volunteered a lot there, great example of the best of compassion and smarts applied to the worlds biggest problems.
I’m really good at
Being genuine, is there any other way to be? As we get older its a natural part of being a close to fully realized person. I really enjoy hearing people's stories and insights about life so far, such an advantage to being middle aged!

I was a good, a very good, husband, and I have the same qualities now, just lacking the right partner. I have no outlet for this energy.

Another is improvisation, when you think of it, life is all improvisation. But if you don't have the chops, experiences, insight and chuzpah, hey there is not much to work with and results may suffer. I am a musician where some of this comes out but I try to make it a part of everyday life too. I love the fast paced decision making that is necessary in athletic pursuits, this can only come from years of skill building. There is just no room for mental bs when fully engaged in these things.

Diving in cold water and feeling intensely alive during and after, such things as body surfing, swimming clear rivers, skimboarding, but having a hot shower/tub nearby helps, in fact it has become almost mandatory.

I try to take each encounter with a new person, any new person (waiter, gas station attendant or good friend) an opportunity for them to express who they really are and scoot a little further down the path of fulfillment, so really being there for them is something that yes, I am really good at. They scoot me along in the process.

Taking care of myself, not obsessively but my health and mental state are excellent I like to think, I know the things that make me happy. That being said, I know too much focus on one's self can result in a person that is hard to be with...that is not me.
The first things people usually notice about me
OK, well as you will see, the obvious thing is my height, six five, but I slouch when necessary. Other than that, who knows?
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Usually have at least two or three books going from my book group's list and my own. A favorite novel that comes to mind, Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner. Writing a story of my Grandfather's life that was inspired by this book. Lots of great non fiction too, which partially satisfies my curiosity about how the world works and the fascinating people in it.

A quote from a book I just finished (Shantaram):"...I know now that when the loving , honest moment comes it should be seized and spoken, because it may never come again. And unvoiced, unmoved, unlived in the things we declare from heart to heart, those true and real feelings wither and crumble in the remembering hand that tries too late to reach for them". A good bit of wisdom methinks.

I loved the film Cabaret, probably seen it more than any other, a perfect story set in an historic time like no other between the wars in Germany. As Good As it Gets, Juno, The Motorcycle Diaries, Cinema Paradiso all good films.

Wide range of musical tastes, grew up loving and playing rock, blues and acoustic singer songwriters and that continues, but discovered Brazilian music (pre dates the bossa nova most are familiar with) and played in a choro/samba group for eight years. Pat Metheny's music is like heaven to me, will never miss another one of his shows and my plan is catch him in Europe next time. Glad I heard so many great players before they passed, during the 70s I immersed my self in jazz a lot, (disco?....what the hell was that?), I did not even notice it. Wish I had caught Thelonious Monk when he was still playing....also passed up an invite to hear Zepplin at the Filmore in 1968, that's about it for regrets.

Fresh food, things from my garden, grilled meat and salad, not much grains. My dad and grandpa were both cooks and so am I, got a metabolism to feed and I love it but not a fussy foodie type. Only too happy to eat your cookin' and do the dishes though.
The six things I could never do without
- Playing basketball, (not much interest in watching others) which is a lifelong passion, & other physical pursuits
- Playing music and hearing great live music
- Someone special...though I currently am doing without, the sharing, holding, touching, and "being there" for each other...I miss it a lot.
- Family, Friends. Enjoying my three kids as fully engaging, insightful and loving adults
- Being outdoors with buddies
- Knowing the world has tons of dedicated people smarter than me doing great work...TED.com does a great job in keeping me up with at least some of them
- My creative outlets
....six is such an arbitrary number
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The now and the next period of my life and making it the best it can be. Travel possibilities or simple get out there this weekend and do it activities.
On a typical Friday night I am
On the back deck, enjoying company, food, sun, music, libations.... Could just as easily be out enjoying culture and social things, or perhaps headed out of town on the way to an adventure.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I am willing to reveal plenty about my private self, but not here. I am quite transparent to a trusted soul.
