My self-summary
I'm a refugee from the blighted state of Michigan. I fled my native land six years ago after graduating from college, before the roaming bands of unemployed auto workers burned my ancestral manor to the ground. I barely made it out alive. Other Michiganders were not so lucky...

...but now I live the good life in sunny California! I'm an elementary school teacher at a private school in Aliso Viejo. People get a certain impression whenever I say "private elementary school teacher" and it's usually pretty dull. I work at a small, innovative school and think my job's more exciting than most teachers'. Ask me if you want to know what makes it different.

When I take time off, I'm usually cooking, hiking, or playing exceptionally nerdy card games. I listen to audiobooks and podcasts nonstop. I'm always planning my next trip to the art museum or concert hall***. I'm also a big theater fan. Whenever there's a play by Shakespeare or an ancient Greek tragedy or some other classic on stage between LA and San Diego, I'm there. I've got tickets to see King Lear later this month; do you wanna come with me?

*** I don’t actually know how to appreciate classical music. I’m just trying to fake it until I make it. I want to know what all the fuss is about and I have a special connection for cheap concert tickets.
I’m really good at
-Visiting art museums.
-Arguing about the meaning of a movie.
-Helping a child who is crying.
-Fixing printers.
-Finding new hobbies.
-Admitting when I don't know something.
The first things people usually notice about me
Physically, friends tell me my eyes and smile stand out. I was hoping they would tell me I have an ass that doesn't quit, but I guess they're just shy.

Personality-wise, people have told me that they like talking to me because I "actually listen and ask questions." I thought that was flattering.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Ninety-Three, Getting Things Done, Surely You're Joking Mr. Feinman, Ender's Game, The Oxford Book of English Verse, Less Than Words Can Say, The Fountainhead

Movies: The King's Speech, I Love You, Man, Amelie, The Paper Chase, The Name of the Rose, The Lives of Others,

Shows: Mad Men, Veronica Mars, Firefly, Dexter, The Office, Community, MST3K

Music: Recently, I've been listening to a lot of alternative and a bit of electronic music: Phoenix, Passion Pit, Daft Punk, and The Glitch Mob. My iTunes collections is more diverse. When singing karaoke, I have an affinity for Motown.

Food: Anything you can be snobbish about — beer, wine, cheese, scotch, cigars. I'm not actually snobby about those things; I just like anything you can develop a taste for.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How to be a better teacher.
New strategies in the card games I play.
Family dynamics.
Why America lost it's Puritan edge in the late 17th century.
Shakespearean sonnets.
On a typical Friday night I am
I usually go out for drinks with my friends from work. Or sometimes I have some friends over to play games, or watch a movie.

I don't like clubs. I'd rather be somewhere I can talk.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I talk to my cat. It's hard because he's a communist and I'm a capitalist, but we keep the conversation civil.

Also, I use humor to cope with awkward situations.
