I am introspective, relaxed, and sometimes silly.

My Self-Summary

I’m a very multifaceted person. I’m a Ph.D. candidate in chemistry at the U of M. My project is nanotechnology related – I *see* atoms! Outside of work I play the bass guitar in two bands. One is a classic rock band (think Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, The Beatles), while the other is an alternative/metal cover band (think Tool, STP, Soundgarden). Music and science are my big twin interests: science lets me be analytical when I want to, while music lets me be creative.

I like to exercise – it’s sort of my time during the day to meditate and sort everything out. On the weekends I’m equally content going out or just staying in and relaxing, as long as I’m with my friends. I have a huge range of different interests from philosophy to food to vintage synthesizers – I’m very rarely bored.

What I’m doing with my life

Trying to learn all that I can without being overwhelmed. I want to find balance between my work, my family life, and my other interests. Maybe that sets me apart a bit from other scientists out there who really can be "all science - all the time."

I’m really good at

Selecting breakfast cereals. I'm pretty much an authority.

The first things people usually notice about me

Probably that I'm a pretty quiet guy initially, but can suddenly become extremely talkative if set off on something interesting. Also, my ears stick out.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Dune, Slaughterhouse Five, Cat's Cradle, Breakfast of Champions, The Tao of Pooh, Childhood's End

Movies: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Ghostbusters, The Last Temptation of Christ, Back to the Future, Almost Famous, There Will Be Blood, The Secret of Nimh

Music: Weather Report, Tom Waits, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Hedges, Michael Manring, Richie Hawtin, Marc Houle, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Bjork, Pearl Jam, Peter Gabriel, Tony Levin, Elvis Costello, Pat Metheny, Steve Lawson, Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Shakti, John McLaughlin, Shadowfax, Tool, The Police, Sting, Nick Cave, Number Girl, Radiohead, Death Cab For Cutie, Allan Holdsworth, Antoine Dufour, Frank Zappa

Food: My current favorite restaurant is Holy Land on central ave. It's a middle eastern deli/grocery store. The buffet is very irregular: it can range from mediocre to literally the best food you've ever tasted!

The six things I could never do without

Family, friends, music... do I really need three more things?

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Ok, as someone who routinely takes hour+ long walks around the city for no other reason than to think, this is a tough one to answer!

On a typical Friday night I am

Having dinner with friends. Maybe later in the evening we'll go out to hear some music or explore the city, but that's more of a Saturday night activity. Friday night is kind of the relaxing/"cool down" night.

You should message me if

I have so many different interests ~ I will probably not be able to resist commenting if you have anything to say about music, cooking, science, etc...
