Depending on my mood, I watch both smart movies that make you think
or dumb movies that don't. I dressed as Bill from (of Bill and
Ted's Excellent Adventure) for Halloween this year, which reflected
my obsessive re-watching of those movies. I'm not picky, but I
can't handle horror movies because I am a delicate flower like
that. If it's a costume drama, I'm probably in. I have a weakness
for 1930's screwball comedies. (I have a crush on Katherine
Hepburn.) Some movies that have made an impression on me: Bad
Education, Spirited Away, Star Wars, Kill Bill 1&2, It Happened
One Night, the Big Lebowski
I read constantly. Travel books by
Paul Theroux, fantasy by
Terry Pratchett,
magical realism by
Murakami Haruki, nonfiction
science by
Richard Dawkins, and lots and
lots of
Japanese textbooks. Just to
start. Recently, I've been reading books in Japanese. It's hard.
最近乙一が気に入る. My favorite book of recent years was "Jonathan Strange
and Mr. Norrell." One of my favorite books of all time is "China
Mountain Zhang," which is about figuring out how to live with
yourself. I still need some work on that.
When I was a kid, there were a lot of things I didn't
like--mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and so on. Now I love all
those things. The only two exceptions are offal and anything that
comes from the sea and is not a fish.
