My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
In my ideal world, I'd be living in a Kipling novel.

Moved to LA from New York. I'm enjoying being back on the West Coast after being away for six years.

Lived in Moscow two summers ago. Three falls ago I was in Cairo. Experiencing a revolution firsthand was . . . interesting. My preferences when it comes to cities: Stockholm in summer, Buenos Aires in spring, Istanbul at sunset, Cairo at midnight during a revolution, Prague in the mid-90s, San Francisco in the fog, Delhi when pride threatens, Berlin when the mind wanders. And Vienna. Vienna any day of any year.

As one might gather, I like travel. Very original, I know.

Insatiable reader, curious to a fault, love arguing on topics big and small.

I sometimes overuse parentheticals.

Proclivities: tennis, skiing, climbing (mountains/ice/rock), late nights, late mornings, European electonica, long solitary walks through dark cities, frozen locales, obscure beaches, and going on pub-crawls through the backwaters of East London in the company of two shady Russians.

In all, a curious mix of high and low.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Journalist to pay the bills. Have a book under contract. And a few other creative projects on the side.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Conceptualizing.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I know the value of a good pair of shoes. And when wearing my glasses I apparently bear uncanny resemblence to a certain Swedish architect (I have yet to find out who).
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Books: Too many to count. Particular proclivities for 19th century Russians (Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Turgenev), postmodernists (Pynchon, Delillo, David Mitchell), stylists (Amis, Nabokov, Joyce, McCarthy), and Romantic poets (Goethe, Byron, Shelley, Pushkin, Schiller). I'm also a copious consumer of non-fiction, history, and philosophy. In general, books = awesome.

Movies: A very small sampling of my absolute favorites: Casablanca, Godfathers (minus III), Apocalypse Now, Heat, 2001, The Battleship Potemkin, Rio Bravo, Aliens, Before Sunrise, Grand Illusion, Lost in Translation, The Searchers, On The Waterfront. Recent favorite: The Great Beauty.

TV: Enlightened (unbelievably sad it was cancelled), Sopranos, The Wire, The Americans, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, House of Cards.

Music: Classical, Opera, and all forms of Electronica (Markus Schulz, Tiesto, Corsten, Thievery Corp., Hybrid, on and on).
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
In order:
1 - My brain
2 - A library card
3 - A word processor
4 - Fully functioning extremities
5 - Sunscreen (damn you Nordic skin!)
6 - Negative space
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
-Global theory
-What it would have been like to have invented the wheel
-How I could have read so much and yet still have so much to go
-Books I am writing (or will write)
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Out. Or In.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I used to ply my trade on the high seas.

Any or all:

-You've ever seriously thought about spending austral winter in Antarctica.
-The idea of reading Rilke while lounging on the deck of a sailboat off the Amalfi Coast appeals to you.
-You avoid cliches like the plaque.
-You venture...

And if you like 'em tan, I'm not your man.
