My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Hi everyone, my name is Jerry. I currently live in the bustling metropolis called College Station, while I work to finish my graduate degree and dream of moving somewhere with real seasons and maybe a museum or two. I'm very passionate about science and spend most days trying to expand my knowledge of biology. I feel fortunate to work in a field that allows me to make real differences in conservation efforts, especially in African forests.

I am a bit of a goofball and I get the "you don't act 35" line a lot. I don't believe in taking life too seriously and try to have a sense of humor about nearly everything. I am confident with who I am to the point that I am not easily offended and I know exactly what I want out of life. I also try to be the best person I can, but sometimes I leave the lights on in a room I'm not occupying. And sometimes I don't recycle.

I find the self-summary section a little funny for a couple of reasons. First, summarizing a person in a paragraph or two is bizarre. Second, no one ever says, "Hi am so and so, and I am not very nice. I am not outgoing, I hate to laugh and I don't really have any friends and I hate my family."
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I am a PhD candidate in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I am researching the phylogeography of African forest birds. Still trying to decide if my future lies in academics or elsewhere. Like professional cat-sitter.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Anything I put my mind to. Is that bragging? Feels like bragging. I have the intelligence and stubbornness to generally do whatever I want. But then most people have that inside them.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I talk a lot. When I am nervous I word-vomit. Sexy sexy.

Music: I almost always have headphones on. The Black Keys, Deer Tick, Of Monsters and Men, My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire, Band of Horses, The Lumineers, Trampled by Turtles, AWOLNATION, Beirut, Wilco, Blind Pilot, Local Natives, Metric, The New Pornographers, The Shins, Sun Kil Moon, Thao, Kurt Vile, Phantogram, Alt-j, Okkervil River, The xx, Autoheart, Cults, The Head and the Heart, Midlake, Wye Oak, Bloc Party, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Books: I'll read anything. Robert Heinlein, Hugh Howey, Game of Thrones, Sean B. Carrol, Richard Dawkins, Justin Cronin, Cormac McCarthy, Calvino, Faulkner, Hemingway, Dostoevsky, I'm always open to recommendations.

Movies: I will give anything a try. I love period pieces and historical dramas the most.

Shows: I have been streaming a lot of Netlix and HBOGo while sitting at a lab bench for long hours. If it is on those sites, I have probably watched it.

Food: I'll try anything. I cook some mean Indian and make great guacamole. I'm really into cooking for people. I hate raw tomatoes though and barely tolerate raw cucumber.
The six things I could never do without

1. My cat Dee Dee.
2. Books
3. Dessert
4. My passport
5. Nature
6. Music
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Science and my future. Also where I want to travel next. What is for dinner tonight...
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Usually graduate happy hour. Sometimes in the lab wishing I was at happy hour.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I sometimes sing out loud for several seconds in crowded places before I know I am doing it. I secretly bird-watch all the time.
