I am easily amused, optimistic, and a geek.
My Self-Summary
(Picture unrelated. It used to be me but not anymore)
Hi, I'm Joeri and I live in Utrecht, the Netherlands. I'm currently
pursuing a Master's degree in
Computer Science, though I miss
math very much.
Things I like include,
programming,
reading,
video games. I'm starting to like
trains, as I don't _need_ to be in them every day anymore. While
the love is not mutual, I also like
biking. If only it didn't break down
every other day. The last two are a direct result of my desire to
see as much of the world as possible. I guess this means I like
traveling.
I'm also
apolitical, and
areligious. This doesn't mean I
don't have an opinion about them, it just means I don't care enough
about it to share it with others.
What I’m doing with my life
My academic progress is in limbo right now, and most of the rest of
my time is spent doing absolutely nothing. And with that, I mean
working on some hobby-projects, instead of making progress with my
thesis, idling in IRC, playing
Kingdom of Loathing
(shorthand: KoL) or on
Kongregate. Occasionally, I go out
for a walk, or some biking, or I take a train to some random other
city.
I wish I was playing
D&D, but my current group isn't
making progress with getting together. Luckily, we play various
types of
Fluxx, and
other
board
games and
card
games.
And lastly, I'm addicted to KoL meets. They're definitely the best
thing that has happened to me in the last few years, and I've met
so many awesome people at these meets. I wouldn't know what I'd've
been like if it wasn't for that.
I’m really good at
Math, programming, that kind of stuff. Or at least, I like to think
I'm good at it. Hard to tell if everyone around you is good at it
as well.
The first things people usually notice about me
That I'm taller than them (except a few, these notice that I'm not
as short as all the rest). The first thing online contacts notice
when they finally meet me in person, is that my accent when
speaking English is way stronger than my typing suggests.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
books:
Lord
of the Rings Trilogy + The Hobbit + Silmarillion; Homer's
epics;
Harry
Potter (all of them);
Discworld. The
Hitchhiker's
Guide to the Galaxy and friends.
movies: Lord of the Rings; Harry Potter;
Matrix;
Monty Python stuff; Action movies
like Last Samurai, Pirates of the Carribean, etc. Almost anything
with Will Smith and/or Leslie Nielsen. Taxi 1,2 and 3. The
Labyrinth (David
Bowie as goblin king ftw!). You guessed it, I watch movies to relax
by. Mental effort not required.
music: I listen all, and I mean ALL. While listening, I decide if I
like it or not. If I hear it later on, opinion may, and is likely
to, change. I like the pandora.com site to find new music that I
like, too bad they shut off non-US listeners a while ago. Symphonic
rock probably describes best what I like, but it's still quite
extensive.
foods: Everything
Italian, especially
pizza. And
cheese, and fries. And Greek food. Lately
I've taken a liking to
Thai and
Chinese food as well. As with music,
there's not much I won't give a try, though I've mostly had bad
luck with seafood. When it comes to snacks, I like fruity things
and other sweet stuff.
The six things I could never do without
Apart from the obvious, here are, in no particular order:
My parents have always looked after me very well. This makes me a
spoiled brat, but I have no trouble admitting that. My
computer/internet connection, my friends (online, as well as
offline), sense of
humour and
relativation, and I'm pretty sure
that going about without my legs would be hard, so I'll make that
number five. Next on the list is
airplanes, as they allow me to meet
awesome people, and see awesome places.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
... why my code doesn't do what I want it to do? Dunno. I'm not
very contemplative. Currently I'm spending a lot of time thinking
about what to write in these textboxen.
On a typical Friday night I am
See "What I’m doing with my life". The fun and excitement of my
life is uniformly distributed over the days. However, if I go to my
parents' place, Friday is when that happens. If this is the case, I
spend the night watching boring TV, or reading Donald Duck or
Discworld.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
Dunno... I hug pillows? If there's anything anyone wants to ask,
just go ahead and ask. As long as I have the right to not answer
(or answer with "I do not wish to answer that"), I'm okay with it.
