My self-summary
I'm a pretty quiet, reflective person who spends more time philosophizing than partying. Born and raised in San Diego, and I couldn't have picked a better place to grow up.

I like reading—letting my mind wander to consider the implications of each paragraph. I enjoy writing—there are few things more rewarding than finding just the right words to express a complex idea. I also love playing tennis—tracking down a hard shot to the corner and smashing it back for a cross-court winner is immensely satisfying.

Barrage of nerdiness incoming: I enjoy anime for its variety of wildly creative genres and art styles, video games for the rewards of mastering a near-impossible challenge, and the internet for its endless rabbit holes of humor and trivia.

I kinda go through phases of niche interests, too. Like information design: a well-made graphic can tell a compelling story and even change the way you think about the world. Or an enclave of Hong Kong called Kowloon Walled City. I get the sense that anything could be possible in the most dense and lawless city block on earth.

I'm an atheist... but don't worry, I won't bite! I think a skeptical attitude and a value of science and reason are more important than religious beliefs or lack thereof. Politically, I'm fairly moderate and try to stay as unbiased as possible. I'm also a Taurus... and like most Tauruses, I think astrology is bullshit. :D
What I’m doing with my life
Since graduating from UCSD, I've been doing a bit of writing, design and marketing. I'm hoping to teach elementary school, so I'll be starting SDSU's credential program in the fall.
I’m really good at
Short-distance speed walking. Taking a step back to see the merits of both sides on a given issue. Remembering songs from elementary school designed to help memorize all 50 states.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Mostly fantasy and sci-fi: 1984, Accelerando, Brave New World, The Diamond Age, the short story The Library of Babel. I'm not super into comics, but I really enjoyed Watchmen and the Flight anthologies. I also loved the Narnia books as a kid.

Movies: Action (The Dark Knight, Bourne), sci-fi (The Matrix, District 9), comedy (In Bruges, School of Rock) and plenty more. I'm also a sucker for unique concepts (Inception, Groundhog Day), anime films (Spirited Away, Paprika) and anything Pixar.

TV: Comedies (Colbert Report, Community, Modern Family, New Girl) along with Breaking Bad, Doctor Who, Mythbusters and various anime (Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell).

Music: Ranges from alt rock (Beck, Coldplay, Death Cab, Muse, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, White Stripes) to synthpop (Foster the People, Imogen Heap, Passion Pit, Postal Service) to ambient (Boards of Canada, Conjure One, Delerium, Enya, Port Blue).

Food: Pizza, pasta, sushi, Indian, Thai and Vietnamese. I love spicy food, and I'm also a shameless food truck junkie.
The six things I could never do without
• Family
• Laptop
• Passport
• Cayenne pepper
• Those rare San Diego rainstorms
• Semicolons; they're such an underrated tool.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I like casually exploring philosophical topics. What constitutes a sentient mind? What problems will need solving 50 years from now? Does the supernatural exist? What's the extent of our obligation to prevent suffering? How do we know what's really true?

I think about politics, religion, my future and plenty of lighter topics, too, but to me philosophy is the most fun.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have a tendency to sneeze when I step out into bright sunlight. It's actually fairly common, but people who know me often poke fun at me for it.
