Rather than make a huge list of everything I can think of for this
category, I think that I'll pick one or two things I like and talk
about them a little.
I've been catching up a bit on Discworld
lately. They're light, fun,
and easy to read. My favorite part, I think, is Death's
philosophical meanderings. I've always felt that Death, as a
general brooding and sinister character of modern folklore, is a
pretty misunderstood person. I much prefer the matter-of-fact and
thoughtful nature of Discworld's Death.
I also like me some Asimov
. The books Nightfall and
Dragons Egg are excellent examples of the kind of sci if I
I also really enjoy a lot of serious or experimental comics. I
recently read and enjoyed 99 Ways to Tell a Story and Fun
I do read a lot of webcomics. 1/0 is an old favorite, and I eagerly
await Sluggy Freelance to actually reach a conclusion. Subnormality
is amazing, and is a fair representation of the way I think.
Oh, and I'm a big fan of Tales of Mu. It's a web-serial story of
modernish college life in a really fascinating and well-thought-out
fantasy setting, and is occasionally a trashy romance novel.
My favorite food is my family recipe for stuffed grape leaves.
Maybe you've have Dolmas at a Greek or Lebanese restaurant? Well,
My family's grape leaves are beef and/or lamb, with rice, salt, and
lemon juice, rolled up in the leaves, boiled with yet more lemon
juice, and served warm. They are to die for. They are best made
with a small group of people to help do all the rolling and to eat
them all afterwards.
I'm not too picky about music. I enjoy a broad range of things, but
honestly, I've never paid a lot of attention to the details, so I'm
really bad at naming bands and songs, except for the popular big
names. I enjoy Rock of all ages. The Beatles
, Three Dog Night
, The Rolling Stones
Hot Chilli Peppers
, The Zombies
, etc. I enjoy some
folksy/bluegrassy/buesy things. I like The Ditty Bops
and the Dresden Dolls
been getting into Andrew Bird's Bowl of
My absolute favorite song is Rhapsody in Blue
I haven't really watched TV on any sort of regular basis ever since
I moved out of my parents' house for college, but I've been
starting to follow some series on Netflix. I enjoy 30 Rock
. I've just started
I really like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
. I feel
like that show is more based in the real-world's march of
technology than other sci-fi that I've seen. I was partially raised
on Star Trek
and The Simpsons
. (The older Simpsons,
the 90's stuff, is the best! I haven't really liked the newer
I think my favorite movie might be Stranger than Fiction
(If you've passed this one up because Will Ferrell plays the
main character, give it another chance. It's not a "Will Ferrell
movie". He's playing a serious role here. I watched it for 30
minutes before I even realized it was him.)
It takes this surreal and silly premise and deals with it in a
simple, thoughtful, and interesting way. It's an inversion of the
classical tragedy. Fate is a human woman and Harold, receiving a
prophecy of his death, rather than running into his destiny by his
attempts to avoid it, changes it by accepting it and appreciating
its meaning. It asks some big questions about the importance of
art. It's kind of silly and kind of sweet, and the bold and
slightly weird sense of style really resonates with me.
I'm fond of movies like that, set in the real world with simple
ordinary people dealing with a surreal premise, like Groundhog Day,
The Truman Show, or Eternal Sunshine.
I'm also a bit of an animation geek. I love most things by Pixar or
Studio Ghibli. Spirited Away is probably my other favorite
I have some pretty broad tastes here as well. I like kids movies. I
like sad stories. I like cheesy adventure flicks. I like movies and
I want to see more of them.
Seeing as I am involved in the production of video games, I'll
throw in a games category here, too. Yoshi's Island, Majora's Mask,
Earthbound, Smash Brothers, and Minecraft are a few of my favorites
(I don't do Toruney style Smash Bros. I love the chaos. If you only
play with no items on Final Destination, then we will not enjoy
playing together). I like games that have an emphasis on
exploration and where it's fun to just move around, like Assassin's
Creed or Metroid.
I like games that are striving to be something more than just basic
entertainment. Shadow of the Colossus, Papo Y Yo, Journey, Mother3,
To the Moon, etc. These are the sorts of games I really aspire to
make some day.
Also, Cards Against Humanity is HILARIOUS.
