My self-summary
Thanks for stopping by! To avoid the dreaded "wall of text", I'll present some interests in list form:

Movies - I'll watch anything put in front of me with moving pictures, it's a weakness really. I thoroughly enjoy a great film, but I also have a special place in my heart for really awful movies. My favorite genres are sci-fi, dark comedies, and anything adapted from comic books (just shut up and take my money Marvel!).

Music - I play the bass, and love seeing live music. I'm working on learning to play guitar better, since I'm not proficient enough to play the songs I dream up correctly quite yet.

Neuroscience - It's my job, but it's also cool to think about how the brain works.

Cycling - I just rode my first century ride (100 miles). I really enjoy riding through the scenery of the Bay area, especially when the destination is somewhere with good food..
What I’m doing with my life
I'm trying to engineer proteins that let me control neurons using light. When I'm not doing that I'm working on writing a platinum album. I'm not sure which I'm closer to achieving sometimes.
I’m really good at
Getting lost somewhere, and enjoying every minute of it.
Finding humor in just about everything.
Referencing obscure movies
Playing the bass
Punctuality (it's a lost art)
Making macaroni and cheese, which is probably my greatest contribution to society
The first things people usually notice about me
Depends on where they encounter me. How poorly but enthusiastically I sing karaoke is definitely one that stands out.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Favorite Movies: The Cabin in the Woods, The Avengers, Office Space, Hot Fuzz, The Nightmare Before Chirstmas, The World's End, The Big Lebowski, Barton Fink, Bladerunner, Edward Scissorhands, Howl's Moving Castle, Rubber, In Bruges, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, and Army of Darkness to name a few.

TV Shows: Futurama, MST3k, Community, 30 Rock, The Daily Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Colbert Report, Arrested Development, Rick and Morty, and Home Movies.

Social Distortion, Bad Religion, The Shins, The Pixies, Rise Against, Catch 22, Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish (I'm a sucker for songs with horns) , and They Might Be Giants who I love seeing live especially.

Favorite books: Song of Ice and Fire, The Dark Tower, Catch-22, 1984, Cats Cradle, Liar's Poker, The Martian.

Food: I'll eat pretty much anything, doubly so if it's spicy!
The six things I could never do without
Music (listening, playing, writing)
The GPS in my phone (I have a terrible sense of direction)
Netflix (is starting to run out of suggestions I haven't seen)
my bass guitar (is like an old friend)
Lists that are one item too short
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Why do I sneeze every time I see a bright light?
On a typical Friday night I am
Watching a movie, songwriting, going out for dinner and drinks, game nights, going to shows, baseball games, wandering aimlessly until something catches my attention. There are way too many fun things to do to pick just one. As long as I'm with people I enjoy being around, i can be happy doing just about anything.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
If I watch more than 5 minutes of any movie, I feel obligated to finish watching it no matter how awful it may be, so you can make me watch almost anything.

Please don't use this information against me!
You should message me if
What's this "if" business? You should totally message me! Especially if you took all that time to read to this point. Something must have held your interest to get this far!
