I love reading Slate, The New Yorker, The New Republic and most
sources of longform journalism. My favorite novel is Nostromo by
Joseph Conrad. Faulkner and Hemingway are two of my favorite
authors. Admittedly, I haven't read much modern literature; I spend
most of my time reading books on history or politics. Academically,
I focused on imperialism and naval history in college. I've spent a
lot of time researching both and am still fascinated by the
questions they spark.
I'm musically open-minded. I generally love upbeat, happy music.
The Kooks are a favorite of mine. I also enjoy more typical indie
music: Dawes, Real Estate and so on, but I don't mind pop music.
There's a special place in my heart for oldies: Classic rock, disco
and funk especially. Vintage Alice Cooper, Creedence Clearwater,
Jackson 5 (before all the drugs) and Stevie Wonder all have the
kind of upbeat tunes I can get behind.
Two of my favorite movies (there are many others) are Dazed and
Confused and Casablanca. Any movie that sparks a conversation or
thought is fine by me.
The West Wing is my favorite TV show; some say I know it too well,
but I disagree. I also enjoy Archer.
I eat just about anything. I cook quite a bit. Some favorites are
stir fry, fish tacos and Brussels sprouts.
