My self-summary
DISCLAIMER: This shit is dangerously out-of-date. I'd change it but I'm too busy folding 7-4 unsuited in my PokerStars tournament. Just be aware that I still live in Japan and I'm not going to open a bar. Rest assured, whatever I do it will be interesting and fun.

Fuck, I literally just got dealt 7-4 again.

I'm Ben. I like playing the guitar, playing the bass and writing songs. I love languages; my job when I have one is translating Japanese to English. I like videogames, especially Rock Band, and reading though I haven't read a good book in ages. Recommendations very welcome!

I'm a firm believer in going out and making yourself the happiest you can be. I've decided that 2009 is going to be the year I look back on and say 'That's where it all changed'. I don't know why, or how, or when, but exciting things are going to happen this year. If they don't, then I'll go out and damn well make them happen.

I'm moving to Japan on the 7th March to go and live in Fukuoka for a bit. Not sure how long I'll be there but it'll be at least 3 months. Exciting stuff.

I am a terminal procrastinator. I'll tell you about it tomorrow. But not in the morning because I seem to have picked up the tendency to not go to bed until well after 3am.

I put 'Judaism' under religion because I identify as Jewish in many ways. However, I'm 'laughing about it' because I'm pretty much a hardline atheist as well. A contradiction in terms? Perhaps. But Judaism always seemed like more than a religion to me- how many supposedly Jewish people who didn't believe in God died in the Holocaust?
I don't dislike religion. Faith is a great comfort to many, and what people choose to do on their own time is up to them. It's only when religion becomes harmful to others (creationism, zionism etc) that it crosses the line. I'm prepared to accept that there are things that science doesn't know, as well; but I'm not sure it's our place to go round inventing things to fill in the gaps. I've had the science vs religion debate many times, usually as creation vs evolution, and I could write forever on the subject. I've already written way too much, so I'll stop here. If anyone wants to discuss this, please do message me!

What I’m doing with my life
I'm about to go to Japan to teach English in between translating and living it up in Fukuoka.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books is a toughie because I haven't read anything in quite some time. I'm a big fan of writers like Nick Hornby and Mike Gayle, though they're not exactly high literature.

As for movies, stuff like The 40 Year Old Virgin, School of Rock, High Fidelity, Lost in Translation, Talladega Nights and Sin City. Recently, I really enjoyed The Dark Knight and the two latest James Bond films.

Keep your "100 Best TV Celebrity Crib Reality Lists of 1978" and give me: Peep Show, Darkplace, The Day Today, Spaced, Arrested Development, The Office, The Office (American version), Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Harry Hill's TV Burp, Lost and QI.

Music is something I'm passionate about. How about... Regina Spektor, Francis Cabrel, Barenaked Ladies, Jason Mraz, Belle and Sebastian, Radiohead, Weezer, Muse, Blur, Jack Johnson, Queen, Sting, Simon and Garfunkel, Switchfoot, Matchbox 20, Maroon 5, Beck, John Mayer, Take That, Squeeze,Tenacious D, Missy Higgins, Disney Songs (especially Beauty and the Beast!) Death Cab For Cutie, Space, Dum Dums, Natalie Imbruglia, The Script, Ben Folds Five, Seafood, The Divine Comedy, Rhett Miller, Old 97's, Howie Day, Joshua Radin Brendan Benson, Bright Eyes, 10CC, Thirteen Senses, Kings of Leon, Dogs Die In Hot Cars, The Magnetic Fields, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Willy Mason, Stephen Fretwell, Nizlopi, The Vanity Project, Paramore, Sigur Ros, Eric Clapton My Chemical Romance, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Journey, Kansas, Get Cape. Fly, Elliot Smith, The Bluetones, Sufjan Stevens, Mika Nakashima, X Japan, Yuzu, Yuna Ito, Utada Hikaru, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Remioromen, Kobukuro, Bonnie Pink, YUI, Miyavi L'arc~en~ciel.

Recently, I'm starting to get into the blues and 50s/60s music such as doo-wop. Hopefully, one day in the not-too-distant future I'll be opening a bar in Fukuoka, Japan, playing this sort of music. It's schuu's vision really, if you think it sounds cool you should ask him about it!

Food-wise, I love Japanese cuisine- soba, sushi, katsu, sashimi, pretty much everything except natto and konyaku! If you don't know what those are, be very glad.

I wonder if this list says anything about me?
The six things I could never do without
The bright landscape breathing out under a boiling grey sky as the storm soaks away into the soil and the tree leaves.

A cold foot against my leg, someone caring enough about me to want to take a little of my warmth for their own.

The thought that I was once the youngest person out of over 6 billion, and the idle thought that maybe I'll be the oldest one day.

The heartbreaking beauty found in the perfect chord change.

A world beyond my front door.

An uncomplicated, innocent and unbearable excitement at the sheer intense, incomparable joy of living.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Words. Translation and songwriting, mostly. Recently, Feminism, and the implications of being a member of the patriarchy in the 21st century.
On a typical Friday night I am
Trying to make 'fetch' happen.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have read all of Louise Rennison's books.

I can salsa!
I’m looking for
  • Girls who like guys
  • Ages 19–28
  • Near me
  • For new friends, long-term dating, short-term dating, activity partners, long-distance penpals, casual sex
You should message me if
You're after fun and interesting conversation, a new friend or just someone to mouth off to about your shitty day at work.

I recently came out of a long-term, long-distance relationship but I'm starting to look around again for something. I'm not looking for anything incredibly serious, but I tend to fall fast and hard so who knows what might happen? It all starts with a message.

Human contact is what life is all about.
