My self-summary
In three adjectives: smart*, adventurous, and nerdy.

* OK, that sounds pretentious... what I really mean is I enjoy learning, am always curious, can often figure things out, and enjoy discussing serious topics.

In a few more words: feminist and supporter of gender equality and LGBT rights, opposed to organized religion (and don't believe in any sort of divine being at all), strongly concerned for the environment, politically active (leftist, but I don't toe any party's line), and deeply interested in things like anti-censorship, net neutrality, and the general interaction of laws and technology. I think sex-positive culture is a good thing for society. I also think there should be an option under "Sign" for "Can't be bothered to look it up."

I've been to five continents (so far). I spent 3.5 years cruising the tropics on a sailboat instead of going to high school. I still have a long list of countries to visit, though. I really hope that at some point in my life, the cost required to visit space and the money I can afford to spend on travel will intersect.

When traveling, I prefer to create my own adventure and rough it to a certain degree, rather than go with a standard tourist package. I enjoy backpacking, sailing, and taking local transit to get around an area. Some day I'd like to try a bike or horseback trip.

I'm also very into computers (including things like smartphones), and love tinkering with technology. My area of particular interest is security. I enjoy the challenge of finding ways somebody could break into a computer, without the ethical and legal problems of actually breaking in (or at least, of breaking in uninvited).

While I wouldn't call myself artistic in general, I love photography. Traveling abroad, hiking near home, or just wandering on a pretty day. Underwater photography is incredible; I really miss the clear tropical water.
What I’m doing with my life
Putting my computer engineering degree to good use, when I'm not off doing things like trekking in Nepal (three years ago; I need another big adventure soon). My first job out of college was fun, but also left me no time for an actual life outside of work. My current job is even more fun, and appears to have a more reasonable work/life balance.

I have a Subaru and am always looking for excuses to take it up to the mountains. At some point, I'll go back to school for an advanced degree. In the meantime, I spend a lot of time petting cats and working on my computer at home (including a lot of time on hobby projects, like hacking my phone).

I look forward to winter for skiing, summer for hiking and tennis, and everything in between for gaming, reading, and hanging with friends.

I'm also planning trips to Africa, India, and Europe. I hope to find somebody to travel with, to share the experiences of the world.

What I'm doing *here*:
Looking for somebody to have fun with, mostly. No expectations of anything long-term but I'm not opposed to the idea.
* Somebody who will help me make happen all these things I want to do.
* Somebody who wants to get out of the city, or state, or continent with me and go see things.
* Somebody with her own adventurous ideas.
* Somebody who is straightforward and doesn't play "games" with me.
* Somebody to play actual games (the fun kind) with!

Basically, I'm looking for somebody who is a friend, and also more than a friend. I can do quick and casual flings, but I'd also be happy to find a serious and lasting relationship. I'm not particularly looking for more "just friends" although I'm always happy to meet people, regardless.
I’m really good at
Sailing a yacht, and maintaining one.
Building and fixing computers, both hardware and software.
Photography, especially when scuba diving.
Explaining things, especially in technical areas.
Coaxing cats (and sometimes dogs) to be my friend.
The first things people usually notice about me
On this site? The picture of me petting a tiger. Otherwise...
Physically? My height, and maybe my beard.
Behaviorally?
I discuss things enthusiastically and laugh heartily.
I'll strike up a conversation about books in an instant.
If I'm alone, I'm usually looking for somebody to talk to.
If I'm in a group, I'm never the quiet one; I'm part of the conversation.
I'm rarely far from music (MP3 player, computer, car radio) and often whistle (poorly) or sing along.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I'm arbitrarily limiting myself to a few each here. Comprehensive lists would take all day!

The six things I could never do without
The Internet, for helping me stay connected.
Places of natural beauty (mountains, forests, coral reefs, etc.)
Airplanes, boats, passport, and everything else needed for travel.
New places to go, things to see, and books to read.
My computers and some programming project
My camera, tennis racquet, phone, music, and books.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Future travel plans - where to go next, when, how long to spend, what to do, and who to go with.
Video game design (I've got a long-running hobby project game).
Space travel and other "crazy" things I hope to experience in my life.
New software or other technologies.
Books I'm reading.
Civil rights
On a typical Friday night I am
Hosting a game night with friends (Rock Band, etc.) or working on a hobby project (lately, a lot of hacking on my tablet). Sometimes, getting an early start on a backpacking or skiing trip.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Despite a couple of past relationships, I have very little experience with conventional dating. I don't know how the game is played, basically.

I also have a tendency to be somewhat oblivious to interpersonal clues. If you say something, I'll probably take it at face value. If you don't say anything about something, I might not even notice it.

Waiting for me to contact you can be a bad idea. Sometimes I get distracted and forget to write even if I have something I want to say. Message me instead; it goes better for both of us that way.
I’m looking for
  • Girls who like guys
  • Ages 21–30
  • Near me
  • Who are single
  • For new friends, long-term dating, short-term dating, activity partners
You should message me if
You like travel, enjoy discussing it, and are into the idea of seeing the world together. Where have you been, and where do you want to go?

You enjoy or want to try:
Backpacking / Tennis / Skiing / Biking / Diving.

You're cool with:
Computers / General nerdiness / Technology.

You like talking about:
Books / Webcomics / Movies / Science news / World events

You enjoy playing:
Video / Card / Board / Word / Role-playing games.

You're intelligent and don't try to hide it. Among other things, this usually means an interest in learning.

You are not:
A smoker.
A drug user.
Religious (to any noticeable degree).
Homophobic.
Racist.
Sexist (yes, women can be sexist too).
Illiterate.
Vegan or very strictly vegetarian (it would be awkward).

You like getting a response back probably 1.5-2x the length of yours. I write long messages. It's a habit from my time on the boat.

If you're just looking for new friends or ski/tennis/hiking buddies, that's cool too. I'm always happy to chat about mutual interests, and find people to enjoy them with.

You should also message me if you're wondering if I'm ever going to message you. Yes, I probably will.. but I'm really bad about initiating contact, so if you've seen me visit your profile but I haven't messaged you, the odds are that I'm just not sure what to say, or how to say it.
