Books: I read like crazy. I'm the biggest fan of Ian Banks' "The
Culture" series. Best space opera ever. So sad he died :(
Also really into Kim Stanley Robinson, just finished 2313, the
sequel to the Red/Green/Blue Mars trilogy.
Fate Is the Hunter by Ernest K Gann is an amazing book about the
early days of commercial aviation. Totally inspired me to start
taking lessons for my pilot's license. Ocean sailing and flying
small planes are pretty effective ways to test your karma. Also
read Lindberg, the biography by A. Scott Berg, a rather tragic
April is summit season on Mt. Everest, which I get excited about
vicariously, especially when getting over a broken leg. Read Dark
Summit and Into Thin Air, the accounts of the two big disaster
seasons. Summited Mt. Allen myself last week, concluded too hot is
better than too cold when climbing haha.
Following Edward Snowden's reveal of PRISM I decided to reread 1984
last month. Talk about prophetic and depressing. Reamde by Neil
Stephenson cheered me up.
I've read the whole Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) series.
For once I think the show is better than the books.
Movies: I'm a big fan of 2046 by Wong Kar-wai. 13 Assassins by
Takeshi Miike is great. The Man from Nowhere by Jeong-beom Lee is
Music: I live up in the hills right above the Sunset Strip so it's
super easy to walk down the hill and see bands at the Viper, Roxy,
Whiskey etc. Quality of bands on the strip is pretty hit or miss
however. The big bands I like are diverse: Broken Bells, YACHT,
Justice, Puscifer, Avalanches, Glitch Mob. I was pretty much raised
exclusively on '60s music by my parents, so I try to keep
Crosby-Stills, Creedence, and Country Joe in circulation. Spotify
is the best thing ever.
Food: I'll eat absolutely anything that comes out of the ocean
haha. I like Chinese, Brazilian...there's not much I don't like.
Growing up in Asia conditioned me pretty well to not being picky.
When I was working in China I had to go out of my way to find weird
stuff to try. The fish heads and chicken feet they like to scare
foreign business guys with were old news hahaha. I almost gave a
Mongolian factory owner a heart attack pounding shots of snake
blood and stomach bile. In retrospect, the fact that he was scared
of it should have given me pause, but it turned out fine in the
