My self-summary
Still trying to figure out whether it's better to practice science as a career of passion or as a career to fund ghastly expenditures on road trips, music, and alcohol. In the meantime, I really like to tinker - computers, cars, cooking, welding, genomes, anything. I've been told that Machine Project would be my paradise, but I haven't found the time to go there yet.

I value people who like quick and smart conversation, especially those who can be witty without abandoning their kindness. I think passion gives you a strong moral compass, but self-awareness gives you a great sense of humor. Both can help you out in dire straits.

INFJ if that's at all helpful.
What I’m doing with my life
I used to be a staff researcher for a bioinformatics lab, but a not-so-generous NSF made it so I quickly became a volunteer researcher. I still help around in my spare time running analysis, teaching grad students practical lab techniques, and protecting undergraduates from burning their hands off.

Now my day job is being a web programmer for a law school library. Not exactly my passion project, but the pay is better and I'm surrounded by computers and books, which isn't so bad. Right now I'm saving up cash for my MS and PhD, hopefully in the field of human evolutionary genetics.

This is all in case my dream of being a competitive crossword champion doesn't take off.
I’m really good at
Holding a conversation, investigating shit, laughing at absurd situations, doing Tom Waits impressions, being deadpan, reading emotions (or so I'm told)
The first things people usually notice about me
-That I love wordplay and speak partially in puns.
-My eyes. They're green, with blue and grey streaks.
-My ability to listen and read body language.
-My allergy to passive aggression.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
A lot of punk, a lot of Ethiopian food, and whatever is in the free book bin near the Women's Studies department.

If you want to know more, we can exchange notes.
The six things I could never do without
1. NPR
2. Scotch/Bourbon/Whiskey in general
3. Coffee
4. Crosswords
5. Vinyl
6. Granny Smith apples (they're fucking delicious).
I spend a lot of time thinking about
art, biology, life, music, God (in a non-religious way), literature, crosswords, how anyone can actually know ANYTHING, how to add garlic to whatever I'm going to cook that night.
On a typical Friday night I am
Maybe at a show, preferably in the pit. (if available)

Honestly, I prefer going to bars/concerts/plays/improv on weeknights. Things are less crowded, and cooler, weirder shit is afoot. If you want to go to Doug Loves Movies on a Tuesday night, I'm in.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
When I was younger, I had a speech therapist who loved Fiona Apple. She made me memorize the full title to her album "When the Pawn...", and made me recite it whenever i got flustered or in a stutter frenzy. I don't have speech problems today, but sometimes I say it and it keeps me from getting pissed off.
I’m looking for
  • Everybody
  • Ages 21–30
  • Near me
  • For new friends
You should message me if
1. If you like talking a lot, especially about feminist writing. I've been fortunate enough to have awesome friends who have given me great suggestions over the years, and I'd appreciate further reading suggestions! Bonus points if you can convince me that Kate Millett is cooler than Mary Ellmann.
2. If you like talking about politics and current events just about as much as making fun of how CNN/MSNBC cover politics and current events.
3. If for you Titus Andronicus is a perfectly good answer to a "Favorite Band" or "Favorite Theatrical Play" question.
4. You have been dying to try something new you've heard about (restaurant, bar, graffiti, hangliding, whatever) and none of your friends have the brass to do it with you.
5. We have an enemy percentage above 50% and you know Krav Maga. I'll meet you in a back alley with my nunchaku and we can settle our disputes once and for all.
6. If you know what my OKC handle is about, and you approve.
