My self-summary
I really don't like summarizing myself. I guess I'd say I'm a straightforward, animal-loving nerd. I'm a pessimist with optimistic outbursts. I speak my mind, and can be honest to a fault.

My passions run deep, and when something sparks my interest I will often latch on with voracious curiosity. I never want to stop learning, although exactly what I learn and at what pace are subject to my own interests and short attention span.

I'm more of an introvert than an extrovert, but that isn't for lack of trying. Most of my hobbies and interests are a little more niche than what's typically considered normal, so it's hard to find people to do activities with. Most commonly, I enjoy reading books, playing video games, watching a select few shows and YouTube channels, and listening to a few podcasts. I love to play certain tabletop, card and board games when the opportunity presents itself. If weather permits, though, I'll also gladly go hiking, cycling, swimming, and play paintball.

So, yeah. Stuff. And things.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm a full-time zookeeper working exclusively with birds. I love animals, so this is essentially my dream job.

I moved to Dallas for my career, and now I'm getting settled in and learning my surroundings. I've very far from my family and friends, so I'm hoping to make friends and meet some interesting people.
I’m really good at
Animal husbandry. It's my hobby, my passion and my profession. I've worked pretty extensively with domestic animals, but my exotic animal experience is more substantial. I specialize in avifauna (birds), but I still have much to learn!

I like to think I'm good at cerebral activities, I often enjoy activities which carry elements of abstract thinking and puzzle solving.

I'm a decent writer and like to draw from time to time. I have about a 50-50 chance of making awesome food or setting the kitchen on fire.
The first things people usually notice about me
Physically, I first hear about my hair. It was a bi-product of college laziness, but I think it looks much better long than it ever did short.

In terms of behavior, well...I'm an independent-thinking atheistic northerner living in Texas. Yeah.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I love a good book, I wish I could read more than I currently have time for. I'm especially fond of fantasy, sci-fi and fiction. My favorite authors include Douglas Adams, Aldous Huxley, H. P. Lovecraft, George R. R. Martin, Joe Abercrombie and Kevin Hearne. Of all my books, my favorite is probably Last Chance To See. I just finished reading the side-stories to Joe Abercrombie's The First Law trilogy, and I already miss them fiercely. I'm now onto The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

Like my taste in books, I love fantasy, sci-fi and fictional movies. I'm also very fond of the horror genre and animated movies have a special place in my heart. Typically, I like my movies to have a significant storyline and good characters - I don't care much for summer popcorn flicks if they're purely visual affairs. Three favorites are The Nightmare Before Christmas, Wall-E and Schindler's List.

I don't watch all that much television, I instead supplement the bulk of my viewership with several youtube channels. Of what TV I do watch, my favorite shows include Game of Thrones, Hannibal, The Wire and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Other noteworthy shows include Southland, QI, Sleepy Hollow, Doctor Who, Tiger & Bunny and Attack on Titan.

For the most part my taste in music is grounded in the rock / alternative genres. If it isn't country, rap or hip-hop I'll probably give it a listen! I care very much about a song's melody and flow, and have an strong affinity for irish songs. My favorite bands include Flogging Molly, Korpiklaani, The Offspring, Gaelic Storm, Queens of the Stone Age and Carbon Leaf. I've lately been on a folk / blues / western kick, and I've been greatly enjoying what I've stumbled across. Jamie N. Commons is brilliant.

I'm not a fussy eater, but texture matters a lot to me and there are some ingredients I positively detest (water chestnuts, yech). I'm very big on pasta and love italian food. I also thoroughly enjoy japanese, mexican and thai foods, and am willing to try just about anything different or culturally unique.

Since there isn't a category for it: Video games! I'm currently addicted to Mechwarrior Online, but my other favorites include Dark Souls, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, Battlefield 4, the Dead Space series, Portal 2 and Amnesia.
The six things I could never do without
Friends, family, animals, literature, music and my health. I've spent stretches of time isolated with only these things, I know just how precious they can be.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What I'm going to do tonight (the same thing we do every night, Pinky...). When my next nap will be. Did I already drink a cup of coffee this afternoon? I think I did. Maybe. I don't know. Better drink another, just in case. Also, birds.
On a typical Friday night I am
Resting! Zoos have very strange work schedules, meaning that my "weekend" never falls on Saturday / Sunday. When I do have a "friday," I usually stay in to watch a movie, play video games or read a good book. I don't like parties or clubs very much, but I'll happily spend time with friends when I can.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have child-bearing hips. I hate them.
