I am anachronistic, mildly acidic, and trans fat-free.

My Self-Summary

I'm a cerebral sophisticate with a devilish intellect. I like art, I like mischief, I like people who are neither bloodless nor brainless. I'm both introverted and extroverted. I'm a fey narcissist, and I'm self-effacing. I'm charming to some, boring to others; well-mannered in some situations, boorish in others. My caustic inaccessibility is at seeming odds with my boyish vulnerability. I'm just full of contradictions, and really... I'm one tough nut to crack.

What I’m doing with my life

I have a Film degree. I've made some short films. I've written some short stories. My film criticism has been published, and my shorts have been exhibited. My antennae (literally; I have antennae) seem to be bending toward Southern California.

As for now, I help manage a large commercial website.

I’m really good at

Scrabble, video editing, shower crooning, making mix tapes, using the English language. Utilizing, rather.

The first things people usually notice about me

My aristocratic warmth.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Tropic of Cancer, Ham on Rye, The Story of the Eye, The Catcher in the Rye, Crime and Punishment, Elements of Style, On the Road, The Illustrated Man.

Movies: Until the End of the World, Apocalypse Now, La belle et la bête, Faces, Trois couleurs: Rouge, Scenes From a Marriage, Imitation of Life, Sherlock Jr., Au Hasard Balthazar, The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover, Stop Making Sense, My Night at Maud's, Topsy-Turvy, M, The Conversation, The Wicker Man, The Leopard Man, The Shop Around the Corner, The Ninth Configuration, Ikiru, Detour, Bad Timing, Un cœur en hiver, Me and You and Everyone We Know, Babe, Track of the Cat, Short Cuts, The Young Poisoner's Handbook, The Reflecting Skin, Diva, Coming Apart, Night of the Hunter, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

Music: Talking Heads, Cocteau Twins, XTC, The English Beat, Devo, Drink Me, Pram, Broadcast, Swans, PiL, Joy Division, Laurie Anderson, Kate Bush, Jah Wobble, Martha and the Muffins, Sam Phillips, Komeda, Scott Walker, The Left Banke, The Plastics Suburban Lawns, Piano Magic, Kraftwerk, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, The Birthday Party, Ultravox, Stereolab, Dead Can Dance, Psychic TV, They Might Be Giants, Cryptacize, Pixies, Gilbert & Sullivan, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Sparks, Can, Pere Ubu, The Smiths, Tuxedomoon, Esquivel, Klaus Nomi, Wazmo Nariz, Les Baxter, The Magnetic Fields, The Teardrop Explodes, River Roses, Proof of Utah, Gnac, Siouxsie & the Banshees, R.E.M., The New Pornographers, and everything else that's good.

Television: The Office (BBC), Curb Your Enthusiasm, Trigger Happy TV, Kids in the Hall, The Gong Show, SCTV, Alive From Off Center, The Larry Sanders Show, Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Upright Citizen's Brigade, The Vacant Lot, Siskel & Ebert, Taxi, The Daily Show, Peep Show, Wonder Showzen.

Food: Sushi, whole foods from Whole Foods, nonstandard vegetarian burgers, the occasional Muffuletta sandwich, Greek cuisine, Ethiopian cuisine, most ethnic cuisines. I'll give any interesting non-chain restaurant at least a chance, and I'll try pretty much anything I've not tried before, if only to say I've tried it.

Pies: Pumpkin pie, key lime pie, quiche.

Comedians: Andy Kaufman, Emo Philips, Norm Macdonald.

The six things I could never do without

1. The arts.
2. Certain people.
3. Scrabble.
4. Modern technology.
5. My iPod.
6. A pulse.
7. My steadfast refusal to follow directions.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Music, politics, the cinema and its slow death, gadgets, food, what to do on the weekend, my first screenplay, my next move on the chessboard (of life! I'm speaking in metaphor!), my next revision of this essay.

On a typical Friday night I am

Watchin' me a picture show at the nickelodeon, firin' up the Victrola to sonically wallpaper my Scrabble games, or hobnobbing at the speakeasy.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I am not mathematically inclined.

You should message me if

A little bit of me hasn't gone too long a way.
